We are flying J with a stopover in Hong Kong for just short of 9 hours. Does Cathay Pacific provide a free hotel? I know I did this with Emirates but am uncertain about Cathay.

emirates offers a hotel room for a 9 hour transit?as far as i am aware, cathay will only put you up for the night if flight has been delayed overnight.

Thanks foggy. Looks like I may have to venture out into the City for a few hours.

Emirates may have been 10 hours in Dubai but yes, we got a fabulous room.

You won't get a free night at a hotel with a 9 hour stopover in HKG. You will get lounge access if you stay at the airport. Or you can leave the airport and experience Hong Hong for a few hours, depending on the times of arrival and departure.

It depends in whether 9 hours is the shortest connection that could have been chosen. If there is an earlier flight that you could have taken, then no hotel will be provided. If their schedule is such that you're on the best connection, then it's possible.

Can you quote a Cathay policy or cite a web site to support that? I've never heard of Cathay providing a hotel room in those circumstances.

We are in the U.K. at the moment having had a 9hr transit in Hong Kong. We arrived early afternoon and left Hong Kong at 1am the following day. We booked a room at the airport hotel and slept for 2 hours, then went for a swim in the hotel pool, showered and changed and finally, did a lounge crawl visiting a few lounges. The 9hrs flew by.

Hong Kong is a great city for a day trip - easy and reliable rail into either Kowloon or Central and then tons of fun things to do, inside or out.

Go out and see Hong Kong, one of the best stop over cities in Asia.

Or if the day time at least get the bus over to the cable car on Lantau Island...

Happy wandering

Quite a few airlines do offer a complimentary hotel room if the shortest available connection time is between 8-24 hours. It's known as "Stopover paid by carrier" or STPC.

Emirates certainly offers this, as does Etihad, Qatar, Malaysia Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Korean Air, Sri Lankan and many others. Unfortunately Cathay Pacific is not on this list though. As others say, I would head into the city for a few hours and return to the airport with plenty of time to enjoy a lounge crawl.
