Hey all,

Looking to do my first ever hire car booking in March, will be in Brisbane. Looking at booking an EV with Hertz, however I have no clue how to reduce the excess charged and Hertz's website feels a decade or more old.

Does anyone know the easiest way to add it or just when you're collecting the car? Also how much it will cost (its saying LDW is $42 per day, but unsure if thats the $0 excess or just cheaper excess rate).

Sorry for what are probably simple questions, I can book flights in my sleep and can tell you off the top of my head what the frequent flyer partners of Qantas and Virgin are, but I have no clue about car hire at all!

Thanks in advance

Nothing specific for Hertz & electric but this might give you some background. I have used them but haven't needed to claim Car Hire Excess Insurance | Cheap Quotes Fast

Hertz have a Loss Damage Waiver, and a Max Damage Waiver. Which one did you select?

Even with travel insurance that offers coverage for hire car excess, some of them have a condition that you have had to at least picked LDW to reduce the excess down. For Hertz, that's down to $2200. Other hire car companies it can be $4500 or so.

I normally select the LDW, and use travel insurance to cover the rest. The downside to that approach is that you still must pay the smaller excess, and then claim it back from the insurance company.

Also, with the EV, are you after that particular model available through Hertz (the Polestar does look cool), or just an EV in general? Sixt have the Teslas and BYD Atto 3.

My experience is that even if you didn't select it, the person giving you the keys will ask you if you want to reduce the liability (it is an upsell for them after all).

I haven't fully researched into it, but i was told if you're going to regular rent, it's generally better to go for a third party insurer for rentals than with the company as you get much better coverage.

In terms of what the rental offers, the basic means you don't pay anything extra, but are liable for a certain excess. Paying the rental reduces the excess, but you also have to be careful as some things aren't covered by it.
