Hi,

I am looking at a one-way flight from Melbourne to Stockholm (my return flight will be more than 12 months away so unable to book this return flight). By searching for a one-way ticket, it is about $1600 for a Economy Saver. By searching as a return flight, the cheapest to Stockholm flight is $1200 as Economy Saver. The return leg as a Economy Flex is $2000 - I have set the return date to Jan 2018 but I have no intention of taking this flight. Looking at the rules, I can cancel my return Flex ticket after I depart and I get a full refund (apart from a no-show). Has anyone done this before? Is there a catch I haven't seen? There may be a service fee of $60-80 I understand.

Thanks

They may decide to reprice you as a one way, so there may be no refund.

Even if I have already taken the first flight to Stockholm? I am planning to cancel the Flex return flight after I leave. The rules look like this. I wonder if I am missing something

"After departure:
  • The refund will be the difference (if any) between the fare paid and the applicable fare for the journey travelled.
  • Cancellation after no show A$500 per person applies"

"The applicable fare for the journey travelled" will be the ONE WAY fare - i.e. what you would have paid if you only booked the first leg. So they will reprice that leg as (at least) $1,600, meaning you'd only get a $400 refund. They certainly won't reprice it as half the $2,000 return fare. But they may also reprice it as the cost of the fare at the time you travelled, which might well be more, so you'd get no refund at all!

Why not just book the cheapest return you can...and chuck the return?

OR...unless you are truly wedded to QF..there are some very cheap ONE WAY fares available through skyscanner.... I looked at dates in June....
