Flying Air NZ from Sydney to Montreal ..via Vancouver.....where we will pick up Air Canada....will our checked baggage go all tbe way to Montreal or will we have to collect on the boarder at Vancouver and do customs there....any responses appreciated

I'm pretty sure in Canada you clear customs at the first port of entry. So Vancouver in this case.

You'll have to pass through immigration and customs then recheck with AC.
At YVR, there are 3 different channels out after customs. One to leave the airport, one to connect to Air Canada domestic and one to connect to Westjet domestic.

I hope you also have your Canada eTA. (an electronic not-visa required to enter Canada for people who don't need normal visas, much like the US ESTA)
