Hi guys,

Flying Jetstar from Melbourne to Tokyo (Narita) via Cairns. Was hoping to get a reward seat via another airline but simply couldn't for the dates I require and was lucky to find something. Fortunately, Cairns to Tokyo will be in Business Class (I'm aware it's a budget version).

I didn't realise it at the time but the connection time at Cairns Airport is only 1 hour and 50 minutes. I'm rather nervous this may be too short, should I be concerned? If the Melbourne flight is delayed I may be up cough creek.

I tried to change the Melbourne to Cairns flight to 12 hours earlier but the Qantas web site displayed an error on on me and the Qantas phone support are useless and hung up on me...

Arriving at Cairns on JQ938 at 9:20am

Fly out to Tokyo from Cairns at 11:10am

Gate closes 60 minutes before depature so essentially I have 50 minutes if landing at 9:20am.

Thank you.

All in 1 ticket (MEL-CNS-NRT) or 2 separate tickets (MEL-CNS, CNS-NRT)?
If 2 tickets you will not have 1:50 as check-in will close X minutes before [X=30?]. And before that time to collect bags (if any) from the MEL flight.
If 1 tickets it is JQ's problem. They would not sell if below the MCT Minimum connection time.
But MCT does not equal SCT (sensible connection time)

Hi, thank you, yes all on one ticket.

Does anyone know if the bags are automatically transferred to the JQ25 international flight? I guess not as the flight itinerary doesn't mention it at all.

Nope, bags will not be transferred and you will need to check in again in Cairns.

The check in for JQ25 will close 1hr prior to departure and you will need to walk the short 5 mins between the domestic and international terminals. It’ll be tight but is possible and they’re used to it in Cairns so are sometimes flexible with the 1hr cut off (especially if there are still people in the queue).

Ironically QFd to JQi is connected but not JQd to JQi.

JQd is never connected to anything, all bags go to the carousel.

If you’ve got a Qantas domestic (or international flight) that connects onto a Jetstar international flight not only do bags get checked through but you also receive the JQ boarding passes from QF.

Not sure when you are travelling, but have you looked at MEL-SYD-TPE-HND?

There will probably be quite a few on the same itinerary, as long as you’re on one ticket I wouldn’t worry, the early morning flight to CNS is usually punctual

Don't worry about it. They will wait for you.

The 1 hr check in closing time is flexible if there is a queue. They didn't check me in until 25 mins before an international departure in Sydney because they couldn't process all the people in the queue in time. They just delayed the departure time as a result.

My JQd to JQi connection in Sydney was only 1:30. I was worried about it for weeks beforehand but it turns out I didn't need to. In fact, I ended up standing in the check in queue for an hour.

Grrr, thought this may be the case after reading comments from people online several years back. Rather stupid really considering the amount of travelers on-board that would be in the same situation as me connecting to the Jetstar Japan flight. I guess it's all about saving as much money as possible with Jetstar and not the customer experience. At least it's a small airport that isn't overly busy.

Do I get any priority check-in having a business reward seat on the Jetstar Japan flight? I guess there will be a business class check-in counter?

I guess so as the JQ938 flight would have a number of people from Victoria and potentially other southern states onboard to Tokyo. Absolute worse case if JQ938 is late they may put us on the Osaka flight an hour later, which would be very frustrating but not as bad as waiting another day.

Not sure when you are travelling, but have you looked at MEL-SYD-TPE-HND?

I will be traveling there in a few months. Yes I did notice some reward flights with connections like that but considering I could get 1 connection instead of 2 and have the trip to Tokyo done in roughly 12 hours I decided on Jetstar. I will keep on looking to see if any better reward seat flights popup, but I doubt it.

Yes, there will be a seperate queue for business class.

FWIW (and slightly off-topic), I've just booked a UA award KIX-TPE-BNE-CBR in business class (BR/VA), as I really could not countenance the alternative, more direct and cheaper option of NH (Y), and VA (J) KIX-HND-BNE-CBR.

After all, who wants to fly business class on an airline with no lounge access for international travel and a very poor excuse for international business class seats?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Hi,

I'll be flying back NRT > CNS > MEL soon and was wondering if we would need to recheck / clear immigration at Cairns. Our flight continues on the same dreamliner (with the same JQ flight) through to MEL so would they just leave everything and have us clear customs and immigration in MEL?
Also as an aside, my girlfriend and I booked on separate booking references, are we still able to pool luggage at check in?

Yes
are we still able to pool luggage at check in?
Yes.

In the case of self luggage check in, it would depend on whether the system will recognise that you are travelling with someone else in order to be able to share luggage allowance. If not you may need manual help from agent.
