Buying Extra Baggage with an EK ticket when the first sector is a QF domestic? Seems to be the great mystery!

This one seems to have the EK website, the EK and QF call centres and the QF checkin staff bamboozled!
I'm travelling on an EK ticket where the first sector is on QF from Tassie to Melbourne then EK to Dubai and on to Cairo. I'm trying to purchase an extra 23kg bag above the 2x 23kg allowed but nobody seems to know how it is done! The EK booking website can't handle it as it doesn't know how to calculate it across the two airlines, the EK call centre says they don't know but that the checkin staff will know how to do it, the QF call centre says much the same, and the checkin staff at the airport say they don't know how it is calculated either. Has anyone ever had this situation before and how did it work out?

No one would know how it's done because it can't be done prior to travel!

As listed on the emirates website:

If you do need to excess luggage you will need to pay the full airport rate at check in. What I don't know is how it'll be collected...

Qantas should in theory be charge the emirates rate of US$250 per piece but if they're unable to collect that fee in Hobart they may charge the domestic rate of AU$100 per piece and then you'll need to pay emirates separately in MEL. Otherwise it's possible Qantas may charge their rate of AU$300 per piece.
