My wife and I are off to Paris and considering Premium Economy with Singapore Airlines but I have heard of a cheaper alternative to get extra room. Is it possible to buy an extra seat in economy so that we would have a spare seat between us on any airline?

Qantas you can buy a comfort seat - via the call centre only.

Correct me if I'm wrong but SQ don't offer premium economy...

SQ does not have premium economy class. You could buy just 2 economy seats on the SQ website (to allow seat selection), select the aisle and window, and if you select seats far back in the cabin, it is unlikely that someone will be seated in the middle seat unless the plane is very full. This practice is somewhat frowned upon by some but we did it 4 years ago, Syd-Sin-Bcn return. and got the middle seat empty on ALL 4 sectors, which made a HUGE difference to our comfort levels!

my wife and I purchased 2 Etihad economy extra leg room seats from BNE to SIN and they were excellent value -we had window and aisle in a 2 4 2 configuration -only a few seats are available however

Another alternative for you - a gal pal and I have travelled twice o/s 'down the back' and as 2 50+ were prepared to do the slog just to get overseas. Second time we travelled PE but the first time we selected seats down the back - where the fuselage narrows and row goes from 3 seats to 2. From memory on a 747 (?) it's about row 72 or 73. You can then use the space between the seat in front and the fuselage (about half a seat's width) so we popped a carryon there to put our feet on and were able to stretch out. Taking turns we did get a bit more sleep than normal. Check SeatGuru if you want to try this option

We have just flown Sri Lankan Airlines from Singapore to London in Business which was so good we plan on using them again. They fly to Paris and the fares are very cheap for Business - the only catch is the extra cost of getting to Singapore but for only a little extra you get the long haul in business at a very affordable price.

Sounds like your feet would be beside the arm of the person in front. Hope your socks were clean and your feet don't smell.

Nothing personal but I wouldn't want your feet beside me, especially if I was leaning towards the window. Also, that space would be normally belong to the person it is beside, not the person behind.

I see where you're coming from HVR - but I hasten to add we actually we didn't have our (hopefully non-stinky) feet quite that far into the pax's space! The trips I've taken since have been with Mr+1, SQ A380 in business.......after those splendid trips there's no way I could go back to seat 72A I'm afraid!!

How do they compare with the big two CX and SQ?

Sorry looking at so many alternatives. Meant PE on Cathy.

If you are travelling in economy on CX on the A330 it's a 2 x 4 x 2 configuration so if you did purchase an extra seat it would be in the centre block of 4 seats so you still may have another person in that block of 4 seats.
