For the collective wisdom out there...

With the Business Class sale that is on at present, a business fare can be had on some routes (SYD-OOL) for as little as $20 more than a flexi fare on the same flight. With double the number of status credits on offer, it is very attractive.

But, if I am forced to change the time or date of my fare (which is a high possibility for when I am booking), do I have to rebook into a business fare or can I downgrade to a flexi fare with the credit. The change will be very close to the flight date if it needs to be made, and so the business fares are likely to be $200 more (with the sale over), but flexis a similar price.

My understanding is that business fares are fully refundable, ie refundable for cash rather than flight credit. So simply cancel and rebook in any class you like, or even another airline if so inclined.

I asked the Platinum service desk about refunding business fares (in my case a 2 for 1 booking) and was told that they are fully refundable as cash (or credit card etc) as opposed to a booking credit. Thus you can simply cancel the business fare and have them rebook you into a flexi with one simple call.

You have to ring the call centre for a full refund to the credit card

Online it will simply go into a "credit" for use on a later flight

Should be able to cancel online for a full refund... Just another quirk of the website
