There is a massive amount of stuff to read in the main thread on this topic, and that's just a bit beyond me right now.
So, my sincere apologies for starting a new thread, and also if this question has been asked and commented on previously.
However, I also decided to start a new thread to (1) ask the question and (2) avail myself of any advice, expertise, and assistance other members may have to offer on my idea.
Firstly the question - Is it possible to use points plus pay for this fare?
Reason for asking is that I have nearly 200,000 QF points, so short by 80,000 to avail myself of a biz class trip around the world. (Just checked and have 196,591 points as of today)
Am unlikely to be able to generate 80,000 points any time soon as I just lost my job. That means reducing my spending etc which will limit my CC earning which at this stage is my only source of points. I use a Woolies Mastercard with 1:1 and an ANZ Platinum Amex with 1:1.5
I do have money saved, and put aside in my "travel" account for a big trip overseas, which I usually take once every 3 years to go to the UK to do family history research etc. So a trip is possible, though of course I can't go mad as the accommodation costs for a long trip would be prohibitive. In the past, I have managed to be away around 5 or 6 weeks, but could probably manage about 8 weeks with good planning, and maybe having to slum it a bit!
Figured that as I am not working, and no job prospects, I could use the time for one of those "trip of a lifetime" moments, as I will most likely end up on the pension in about 9 months time. I would also mention that as I did contract type work, I always put money aside for the times I had no work, so I have some money to live on, without too much pressure to have to find another job immediately.
I realise that it would be easy to do this in cattle class, and still have points left over, but I just have no appetite for travelling down the back on a journey like this. Flying in economy has never been fantastic, but I am old enough to remember at time when it was far more bearable than it is today, with it's crammed up, 10 across midget seating etc. One flight a year or so ago on one of Etihad's ghastly 777's finished me for good.
Thoughts, ideas, suggestions??
