I'm travelling from BNE to HKG via MEL in a few weeks.

I am flying Y BNE/MEL but J MEL/HKG. Bags will be checked through from BNE.

Do you think I will get hassled if I join the J checkin queue, as for the domestic flight in am only Y.

Logic tells me I wouldn't have a problem, but I have not had this scenario before and sometimes the dragons a bit too unpredictable.

I wouldn't think it's a problem if you are transferring to a J flight as your bags should receive priority for that leg and they can hardly expect you to get them back and then check them again. I guess you are not Gold or QC otherwise you could queue there anyway.
I am so glad I managed to get comped for another year last month. I flew to LAX on Wed and the queue for Economy stretched for a considerable distance. I couldn't find the Business/QC/First counters so I thought I'd be stuck there in Y (Plebland). Then I found J/QC/F are on counter D not E (SYD). I was 3rd in line and was treated royally with my seating preference and my bags tagged to be transferred to UA which was a bonus as I thought they wouldn't do that (UA not being oneworld). Why I was so pleased is that I was only doing an Award flight.
Kudos to QF.

Should be no problem at all. You are being checked in for a business class flight after all.

The J checkin line in BNE is strictly J and Platinum - not Gold.

(I am Gold and will very soon be Platinum)

That's odd because I rang the QFF line when I was looking for a check-in counter in SYD and spoke to a lady in BNE who said QC (ie Golds) checked in together with J (not First of course). She said she wasn't sure of the situation in SYD but that was the case in BNE.

BNE domestic - so no first

In BNE there used to be just Y and QC/J. Now QC and J are split.

Don't know what the worry is all about. I am only plebby silver and I am able to check in to the QC counter.

I know there is one in SYD, I think there is one in MEL but can't remember if there is one in BNE. I will certainly find out Dec 26. Sometimes the one in SYD says QC/Business which means anyone above silver can use.

In the absence of QC counter overseas I have been able to check-in using the business check-in in BKK(Finnair and Qantas), SIN(Finnair and Qantas) and CGK(Qantas). Never been refused.

John, in SIN, when flying Qantas, are you able to use the SATS Premium check-in room or just the QC check-in beside the normal economy counters?

Anyway I've realised over the years that Qantas check-in in Singapore is never crowded anyway, for flights to MEL/SYD at least. Only the minority actually begin their journey from SIN.

Cheers

I have only ever tried the QC check-in. Never had to wait more than 5 minutes.

Most of my sorties through SIN these days are transit only through to BKK so unless get forward boarding in AUS or BKK then I user the transfer desk. This can be a bit lengthy sometimes depending on the number of people waiting and they are very slow workers at the transit desk. :D

Yes, you can. I did not know this existed but on my last trip to SIN was about to join the normal queue when a CSR who was circulating in the crowd approached me and asked to see my ticket. She then directed me to the premium check-in area.

What a delight that was! Escorted to a nice quiet lounge with soft lighting, someone takes your luggage, sit in a comfy chair and chat to the person behind the desk. Everyone nods and smiles at you. It was great. :D

EDIT: Note that I was on a J fare.
