Ive got 15,000 miles to burn from a * program. Im going to be in the USA and thought I would just burn them on United for an upgrade. Am I right in assuming that this is enough for a domestic flight upgrade? Has anyone ever done this and what booking class should I look out for?

Per the UA upgrade chart 15,000 miles for one way upgrade within North America - for booking classes MHQVWSKLT (or 8,000 miles if booking class YB). Note this is a one-class upgrade so on ps service flights (3-class domestic) the upgrade is to business not first. Having said that ps business is better than non-ps first.

It is for one way travel, so domestic stopover rules apply (under 4 hours except forced overnight connections).
