Hi folks,

Contemplating a mid-year trip to New York on VA points (or converting them to SQ points), anyone have any opinions on the best way to get to NYC from Brisbane?

VA to LAX involves LAX (yuck) and flying in the US domestic (yuck again), but is the most direct, cheapest, and I believe has the best availability.

EY is a longer trip and I think a few more points, but with a better seat (particularly if the timing works to get on a 787 from BNE-AUH!) and a less annoying (but still slightly annoying!) transfer.

SQ would be nice, but is a loooong trip with multiple stops... Although Changi is a pleasure compared to LAX or AUH, so maybe it shouldn't count!

Anyone have any thoughts?

Cheers,

Danny

Nah, this is all being bought on points, so no points to be earnt.

Does SQ operate SIN NYC anymore? looked online and all the flights offered appear to be codeshares via Europe ( with one or 2 via another Asian port)

Unsure how long since you transferred via LAX , however I have found my last 3 transfers very fast, and if you are doing a VA redemption , the DL and VX product in J / F is not too bad.

As for EY, the 787 product looks great .... and transferring in AUH is easy ( did it 2 weeks back) ... however .. the connecting time does not look too good in AUH for the NYC flight

I believe the flight has a tech stop at FRA. The nonstop SIN-EWR is long gone.

Yeah, the tech stop at FRA really counts against SQ. I'm thinking EY if I can get availability - just need to nail dates down!

LAX is not as bad as it used to be. The new Tom Bradley terminal is actually quite nice, and the immigration kiosks make immigration much much faster (I have been from plane to kerb within 30 minutes with luggage a few times).

Also, the Los Angeles - New York segment is one of the most contested in the country, so premium cabins tend to be a lot better than shorter haul. I definitely wouldn't discount it myself.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.
