Re: First class Award with QF

From where, to where?

Re: First class Award with QF

Well to start, there aren't many destinations left that has QF F flights in the first place...

I tend to make bookings on EK these days with my QF miles when looking for F seats.

Re: First class Award with QF

Does it have to be QF. Why not Cathay for example

Re: First class Award with QF

I had the same issue. Tried to book for next May back to the UK. Nothing. A few showing up in J class...

Re: First class Award with QF

Supply and demand. 11 million members desperate for a handful of seats while CC companies hand out billions of points. Its going to get a lot worse.

Re: First class Award with QF

Probably from SYD - JFK or SYD - Tokyo

I have around 400k points

For SYD-NRT you can fly JAL in F, but only between (roughly) October 2015 and March 2016, and you'll need to call Qantas to book it.

For SYD-JFK, you might need to use the Multi-city option to look at flying via DXB on Emirates, and might have more options if you're prepared to consider starting in MEL or ADL.

Re: First class Award with QF

SYD-USA direct is going to be very very very very difficult. BTW how many seats are you hoping to book? If its 2 or more, I will suggest you to stop right now and don't bother.

SYD-NRT .... do QF even sell F on this route? I thought they didn't. If they don't you can book a J flight and select a F seat (with J service)

Re: First class Award with QF

Usa seats are hard to find. Had no trouble finding availability LHR to MEL.

How do you actually do this? I've never been able to find an F award on QF or EK SYD/BNE/MEL to LHR. I've only very rarely seen a J award.

Neither have I.
However the way back I have found to be easier LHR to SYD/MEL.

We've booked QF10 from London. I've occasionally seen seats to London but we aren't going direct...

I've managed to find an F last minute flight with EK SYD-LHR - this was booked the day before the flight just 3 weeks ago at the start of the school holidays. I had a backup EY booking in J ex PER which I cancelled.

My experience has been very positive using expertflyer for QFi F flights and last minute for EK (3 F flights AUS-LHR in the past 12 months). Have to say with the demise of the FASA it is unlikely I'd book QF F again given that EK F on the A380 is in my view a better product.

For USA bookings, yes, availability looks scarce, but Expertflyer and some flexibility might let you find something. Otherwise, as others have mentioned, check CX and JL (which can be checked using a BA website reward ticket search).

Re: First class Award with QF

So far I didn't have the best luck with EK F availability to/from LHR. QF availability on the other hand is usually quite good, which makes sense as EKs product is so much better.

The sweet spot with QF is almost free Dom connections (~$AU30 taxes) and also intra-Europe/ME connections for 24K points. If one can take advantage of the "whole package", especially to avoid paying the high LHR taxes then 220K points plus ~$AU400 EU-AU in F is pretty good value.

.

Why between roughly Oct and March?
Is that because they release them 8 months out? If I wanted to book a JAL flight in July 2016, when would you recommend I start calling to look for availability or is it possible to search for availability on the JAL website?

Is it possible to use QF points for JAL from Tokyo to Europe?

It's because JAL only offer a plane with an F cabin on the SYD-NRT route during that period, or at least that's how it was last year, and that's how it is for bookings beyond next March at the moment.

You can't book JAL flights with QFF points online, which is why you need to call. JAL flights open up around 11 months ahead of departure, so for July 2016 you might be able to start booking next month. And Tokyo to Europe is no problem.

Re: First class Award with QF

Thanks trixydoza that's very helpful. That would make an interesting change from our usual stop overs in SIN or KUL.
In your experience do you know if they only offer 1 or 2 J seats per flight or would there be a chance for more, like Cathay do
Thanks again!

Re: First class Award with QF

JAL open up to 4 seats pet flight and availability ex SYD is good. If booking connections need to check the departing airport in TOK carefully. For example, the flight from SYD lands in NRT while most JAL flights to EU depart from HND. Booking JAL with QF points is a bit rip-off, checked last year SYD-NRT F and IIRC it was 136K points plus $300-400 taxes. Not a good value IMO.
