Booking better rooms using points

Hi
Just a quick one - having failed to be able to book the Hilton due to the extreme cost I thought I might try to use some Marriott points. I have about 60K and not status. I saw that I could book the harbour marriott for the night I wanted for 30K points. Having no status means no lounge etc. I was wondering if it is possible to burn more points and book a better class of room using Marriott points?
