Booking Air NZ trip from Canberra?

I'm a former Air NZ Gold Elite, now Gold due to soft landing. I have two upgrades that I would like to (try to) use on an upcoming trip, either to Hong Kong or LAX. But when I try to book with the start of my trip in Canberra, I get a message that says, "Sorry, fares for the selected route are not available for purchase on the Air New Zealand website. Please change locations and search again orContact
Us for personal assistance."

So how do I book this? Do I have to book a separate flight via Virgin to Sydney? That means my luggage won't be tagged all the way through.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You should not need to do separate bookings.

Serfty, I am hoping that you left something off this post.... If I shouldn't have to do separate bookings, then how do I do it in one booking?

I guess I could always call Air NZ and ask them ... sorry for being lazy.

BTW, it is great to see your name, from my many hours on FlyerTalk AirNZ board. Are they still doing Rico?

You should not need to do separate bookings.

It's a bit strange, you can book to NZ, but not LAX.

Maybe NZ haven't filed any fares from OZ (CBR?)to non NZ locations - expert flyer certainly does not return any.

Just booked CBR to LAX in J. Could only do MEL-AKL-LAX on AirNZ, so had to book QF to get to MEL. Pretty frustrating.

When you open the drop down box after selecting CBR it only shows NZ and some Pacific destinations. Maybe their system can't handle more than one stop?

Or they don't have rights to sell fares from CBR???
