I've got a trip to Sydney coming up this Friday and was considering staying for the weekend but really don't want to pay the massive change fee and fare difference for pre booked saver lites.

If I were to book a new flight with points to avoid the change fees, can I still check in to my planned flight in order to gain SC's and points?

I've never had to do this as I'd usually just fly ahead, but I don't think I can fly 2 days behind... :p

Points/SC are credited per each sector actually flown.

Atleast if you cancelled before T-24 (Or whatever it may be), you'd be getting some sort of money credit back - Once you check-in, the fare is worth dust if you don't actually use it....
