I was hoping someone may have come across something similar and can share their experiences:

Earlier this year I booked 2x Qantas premium economy sale fares Sydney-Hong Kong, for June. Things came up meaning we weren't able to do the trip. I cancelled and generated a voucher. The original fare also had the option of a refund less a $400 fee.

I subsequently booked Sydney-Tokyo(HND) fares, also premium economy sale, using that voucher. These flights are coming up next month, and it looks that we may possibly have to cancel again. This time I'd rather get a refund than a voucher, as it's not clear when the other passenger and I are going to manage to schedule travel together again.

Looking at Manage My Booking, when I click "Cancel" it gives me the option of either creating a voucher or getting a refund to my credit card. However: going by the T&Cs on the Qantas site, PE sale fares to Japan in particular aren't eligible for a refund, only creating a voucher.

When I go through the first steps of doing the cancellation - up to what looks like the step before the "point of no return" - the site keeps referring to the terms of the "original booking" - is that the original booking as in my HKG booking, ie. it'll be a refund less the $400 fee? Or will the site let me go through the process, but then I'll discover I've cancelled the flights but won't get any money back?

I wouldn't trust Qantas IT to get it right - I'd do this over the phone personally.

I think original booking rules apply including expiry. Call Qantas to clarify. I don't think there's an extra charge using call centre to cancel.

Agree, original fare conditions of the original fare that created the voucher apply.

Heck if you want the cash refund to the CC and it offers it go for it and hope it works! :D

I think when you elect to convert your booking into a voucher, you can no longer get a refund.

Just as a data point for anyone in the future with the same question: Having re-read the conditions of the original booking, I was confident enough to go ahead and request the refund online. (I figured worst case scenario, I'd be calling Qantas to argue the point with them).
Anyway, no problems, and it was quicker than I expected, too. I requested the refund on the 17th and the funds hit my credit card on the 25th.
