Boeing Kills 747 announces 797 Double Decker

Boeing is today to announce the death of the 747 which will be replaced with the 797, a 900 seat double decker to compete with the A380. The 797 will commence full production by the end of 2018.

The project has been undertaken after much consultation with airlines including Emirates who are believed to have placed orders and options for more than 200 aircraft. Emirates are to cancel all future deliveries of the A380 due to poor resale value compared to the 797.

The 797, predominately Composite structure and new generation engines, is said to be almost 30% more efficient than the current A380 family.

The decision by Emirates to go Boeing over Airbus was also influenced by Airbus not wanting to invest in the A380 NEO.

Could this be the nail in the coffin for the A380 or has Boeing just reopened a market sector that was going nowhere?

I would have preferred the model to be a 907 as I feel sure new mums could nurse their babies with extension seat belts to break the 900 passenger target.

Airbus are replacing the A380 with the A380SC supersonic version anyway.

RR is designing a radical new engine for the 797. Apparently a highly fuel efficient wind powered engine with lithium battery backup. Called the Trent-8000SA

And I hear that the 797 is going to have a variant with a glass roof for passengers to watch the stars at night.

Yes but that glass roof will only be for first class passengers just like the Rocky Mountaineer train but better.

I read a trade review article recently that suggested that Boeing were considering adding a mid sized gym to new aircraft was on the drawing board. The gym will include a reasonable number of free weights to ensure those passengers who were self described " gym Junkies" could get their fix on long- haul flights.
Apparently Boeing believes an inflight Gym might be a real draw card to some airlines and winning over pax.

I wonder if Boeing will incorporate the gym in this new aircraft design ?
