Hi all

Looking for some advice.

Have some annual leave in September, looking at trip to Sth America. Will want to go to Santigo de Chile in middle of block (around 18-22nd) but was thinking of seeing all the major touristy things (Rio, Iguazu etc) in the major cities.

At this stage, looking at the best way to book flights. Am happy to travel through US, but clearly direct is cheaper. But a RTW might allow me a few days in NYC, London, HK on the way back (visit a few friends there).

I've looked and direct return to Santiago is around $2200pp, a RTW seems to start (on QF at least) around $3300 and head upwards from there. At around $3600 vs $2200 for direct, this could be a good option (bang-for-buck so to speak) as it'd allow some stopovers elsewhere.

Any suggestions for an itinery? Would prefer to stay with oneworld airlines, am happy to do overland in Sth America if necessary, but am open to all options. Dont really want to be on an South American plummet airways though.

I can leave BNE on/about 8/9/08 and need to be back on/about 25/9/08. I guess the issue with round the world is will lose a lot of travel time having to go through US, but what about Aus --> Sth America --> UK --> HK --> Aus? is that possible?

Oh, it's leisure, so it'll probably be economy (may look at upgrading / paying for sinlge legs in PE or J if possible on the longer legs eg SYD --> LAX etc)

Thanks for your suggestions (in advance!).

If I was planning an ATW leisure trip in economy I would be travelling west-bound in order to take as many day-time flights as I can, planning to sleep nights in hotels rather than on planes.

I would be keeping long-haul sectors as short as possible, again breaking the journey with overnight hotel accommodation and using those nights as part of the experience in new and varied locations.

But if you sleep ok in an economy seat, you may want to maximise the ground time at your planned destinations and hence find direct, over-night long-haul flights.

Ok, so could go BNE --> HK --> LONDON --> Santiago --> BNE.

Not too worried about sleeping economy or travelling east though.

Doing HK / London first might actually work better with timing too.

Santiago [SCL] to Buenos Aires [BUE] is avaialble on oneworld airline. BA flies to both SCL and BUE.
Iberia flies to both from Madrid and Barcelona, so a side trip to Spain is avaialble after London before S Am.

go to oneworld Online Timetable.

which shows all oneworld flights and destinations

I second NM's advice here. Daytime westward travel is a desireable option and should not be underestimated. Do your body a favour.

Bit of a change of plan atm.

Currently contemplating

BNE --> NYC --> Cuba (Havana/Santiago de cuba) --> SCL --> EXE --> BNE (prob have to go back thru SCL). Abviously NYC --> Cuba wont be driect (thru cancun or Mexico City prob best connection)
