Tonight I transfer 250000 VFF points to KF and was credited with ~185000.

Things didn't work out as planned, and I realised I was better off using them as VFF points, to I was just about to transfer them back, but realised I'd only be credited with ~140000 VFF.

I assumed they'd be credited back equally. Is something wrong or have I made a huge rookie error?

That's the way it works, unfortunately. You should still be able to put 185,000 KF points to good use, though.

That is how it works. You'll have to chalk it up as a learning opportunity.

Do you absolutely need the points back at in VFF right now? If you can leave them in KF until you book something else on SQ would mean you don't really lose.

Thank you both.

I don't need to use them right away, so I'll save them for another trip!

Personally I think 185,000 with KF is more flexible than 250,000 with VFF. I always have trouble finding redeemable long-haul rewards seats in VFF but not so with KF. There's always a 35% loss with the transfer but I wouldn't be too annoyed with having fewer points in KF.

It's important to focus more on what you can do with the points than the number of them. If I could swap from 100,000 Qantas points to 50,000 AAdvantage points, I'd give it very serious consideration. And I channel Amex points to Krisflyer without giving Virgin all that much thought at all.

I agree with the sentiment above.

The other thing to consider is what you value the points at, for example when it comes to booking business class rewards on SQ and choosing between using VA points or transferring and using KF as you will use less points with KF but higher taxes and vice-versa. Point hacks have a great article Minimising taxes and fees when choosing between Velocity or KrisFlyer long-haul redemptions - Point Hacks with some real world comparisons and in many cases it is really close to what I would consider break even, so I would take the transfer and get the better availability using KF points.

One last thing to note also is that SQ has the amazing First Class and Suites Class (on A380s). Whilst VA will say they have fully flat beds, it's still business class at best, it's not the same.
