Hi All,

MrGlider and I are headed over to the states on September to do a three-week jaunt from LA - Vegas - San Fransisco. I'm pretty ok with accommodation in LA and SFO and to a lesser extent the places in between, but I'm interested in people's opinions on where to stay in Vegas.

I'd really like to stay in one of the flagship strip hotels to get the Vegas experience you see on the movies. Something like the Bellagio, MGM etc. Neither of us are big gamblers, so we won't spend forever at the tables but want to have a look around, maybe see a show etc. Also interested in firing some big guns in the desert and head over to the Grand Canyon for a night or two as well.

We'd probably stay for 4 nights and about $300 per night would be really pushing the upper limit so no Presidential Suites for us! Unfortunately it looks like we’ll be there over a weekend, probably Sep 12-15ish. We might otherwise pass through Vegas twice on our way to and from the Canyon and only need the ‘Vegas Strip’ experience once, so am happy to stay somewhere else better value out of the way the second time through.

I can just look on Booking.com and Expedia to find some deals and follow up via the hotel websites direct, but having never been before if you have any suggestions or know of good tips for either the hotels or the area, that'd be great.

I recently stayed at the Palazzo hotel. Its an all suites hotel and you can book it thru the IHG website. If a IHG rewards member you will get the points earn the same as Intercontinental Hotels. Rooms for the period you mention are around USD$239 for a fully flexible rate. Better rates are available for AAA bookings or prepaid. Its right in the middle of things and not as far out as the others you mention. Walk everywhere on the strip

Palazzo is a great choice we were there in April... we spent a few dollars more and got a suite ... didn't know you could get IHG rewards, we used the hotels own reward program Grazie

What a coincidence, just opened my email got a email from Palazzo saying they miss me and offering a 25% discount on my next booking....

I love the cosmopolitan, where else do you get an open balcony (extremely rear) overlooking the Bellagio water show better than their own guests. Also overlooks Paris, planet and the strip. It's a great hotel. There is my 2bobs worth

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Stayed in the Vdara, one of the few hotels close to the strip that doesn't actually have a casino in it, and is smoke-free if that is of any value. We had a nicely appointed room (modern furnishings) with a view over the "lake" (Bellagio Fountains), and excellent view o a good chunk of the strip and beyond, and really enjoyed it.

Tripadvisor complaints are that it isn't on the strip and was a long walk to the strip, I assume these were made by the less able bodied amongst us - its about 300-400m or so from the strip via either other hotels/casinos (Bellagio, Aria, Cosmopolitan) or a road, so that wasn't an issue. Also has only limited eating options, but again with so much nearby we never ate in the hotel either.

IMO, anywhere on The Strip is fine. The Strip is really long, and not really walkable, but there is a bus that goes up and down and doesn't cost much. Just to put things into some kind of perspective, I stayed at the Bellagio, wanting that movie/Vegas experience. It took 8 minutes to get from the hotel lobby to The Strip, and this using the travelators! Vegas is big and bold, and hotels will give great deals to get you stay at their establishments.

If I were to go back there, I would be looking at hotels towards the end of The Strip on the bus route and saving my $$$ for Grand Canyon Helicopter tours and the like. That is not to say that the hotels are worse at either end of The Strip, just that, like you, most think mid strip is better.

I found the big hotels on the strip to be far too expensive (even more so with the resort fees).
When I was there last year, I stayed at the Hampton Inn Tropicana. Just behind the strip on Tropicana Avenue. Across the road from an In n Out Burger and less then 5 minutes walk from the MGM Grand. Has a free airport shuttle which also drops people at the MGM or Tropicana. (and no resort fees)

Venetian (All suites) IMO. Mid strip, you can do short walks without having to walk the entire strip to get back to your hotel. Close to everything, great pools and heaps of great food. The steaks at Wolfgang Puck's are amazing if you get the chance.

Just avoid Stratosphere and Circus Circus if you're looking at the end of the Strip...

We stayed at the Luxor. Not as fancy as some but we had a great spa suite for less than $90 a night. Monorail connects it to the next two hotels and then mid strip is an easy walk.

I agree with this. We went to Stratosphere one night and did the rides at the top. We waited for a considerable amount of time to get the bus back to Bellagio, (it was very late at night), and ended up hailing a taxi. Having said that, we may have been waiting at the wrong stop?? We took the bus to both outlets at each end of the strip too.

I'm on a budget so am at Travelodge LV Centre Strip. Anyone stayed there or in the area?

I am in Vegas right now - currently enjoying a Gordon Ramsay Hell's Kitchen burger :)

I will highly, highly recommended staying at the Cosmopolitan Resort in a Wraparound Terrace 1 bedroom Suite with Bellagio Lake view.......

pictures to come, once I finish my burger :)

The Cosmopolitan is a winner!! Centre strip, public areas are flawless, The Henry serves awesome American food and their buffet, the Wicked Spoon smashes the Bellagio.

Now here's the room ;) ;) ;)

Your Wraparound Terrace Suite at the Cosmopolitan looks very impressive. I'm probably going to the Consumer Electronics Show in Jan, and I'm getting tired of the Venetian despite its convenience for my convention. I checked the prices for that room at the Cosmopolitan for when I'll be there, but its rate soars to $1,100 a night for that week. Ouch!

Cosmopolitan is definitely a modern hip hotel - smack bang in the middle on the strip - and if you get a room with a balcony overlooking Bellagio lake - views are priceless. Photos were taken using standard Samsung smartphones so no special effects there ;) There living area is pretty big, the bedroom is large and spacious ensuite, the terrace wraps around two sides - overlooking Bellagio, and then across over the Planet Hollywood and the airport. There is a full size kitchen and second bathroom / shower for guests. Prices were >$300 a night though.

I have stayed in several Vegas hotels and Cosmopolitan wins hands down.

I use several sites to look for deals, however Las Vegas Hotel Discounts, Deals and Specials – Cheap Room Rates helps me alot, so you can get some decent rates, even for weekends.
