We're planning a trip next Easter flying LHR-MEL-SYD-LHR. QF are just selling that far ahead. Prices are around GBP 1000 in Y which equates to about AUD 2000 (the pound's totally stuffed at the moment). Will they go any lower, or is it a case of the earlier you book the lower the price? The way fuel prices are going, of course, they may go higher. As I understand it the price can't go up once the ticket is paid for in full.

Once it's been ticketed, the price cannot go up. Of course, if you have any reason to change your ticket, you will be charged. The price sounds good to me, but ticket prices are often (?always?) higher SYD - LHR - SYD than the other way around.

All my family is in the UK, and I regularly watch the prices - the best price (though starting in Aus) is normally around the 2150-2200 level for QF to Hthrow so this sounds as a good as it will get if you need to be here

Thanks for the comments. The fact that the A380 schedule has now been released and it looks as if we can return on one using the QF31 means I shall probably crack on and book.
I also dug out the booking from 6th July 2006 for our trip last Easter. The comparison reads:

July 2006
Fare: GBP 703.00
Charges/Taxes: GBP 153.30
Total GBP 857.30

June 2008
Fare: GBP 768.00
Charges/Taxes GBP 375.40
Total GBP1143.40

The rise in the "Fare" seems reasonable - it's the taxes that are the killer and these certainly won't drop!

It seems like a good price, it's not OW, but you might want to check out Emirates, they're costing out at $1898 inc taxes.

2k on QF when you realise the taxes are 6-700 is a good fare, i'd book it.

Thanks TG,
Seen you other post about an imminent price hike, so I think the time has come. Will take a look at Emirates, but the QF timings and journey times are attractive.

I'm not sure whether the fare hike of 4% is affecting ex UK flights on QF, but if so, you've got until next Wed. to tkt without incuring the extra...could be worth looking into it just incase.

Rang QF in London and the reservation is holding for me. The helpful agent offered me 70J/K and 71J/K saying that they were the first seats to go and that she'd sit there with her family. Our daughters are 9 and 3 and I guess the extra space is useful and also they can probably stand at the window, being small - am I right?
I would normally avoid sitting so far back due to a) noise from jet-wash b) general milling around at rear of the cabin and access to the loos c) the gentle wagging of the tail d) last to de-plane / present at immigration.
By the sounds of it I should go for these seats, though. Any views anyone?

I have not found it to be any noisier at the back of the cabin in a 747, except maybe at takeoff. Now if it was an MD80 then things are very different! But you can always take some ear plugs with you just in case.
b) general milling around at rear of the cabin and access to the loos
This can be an issue just after meal services. But generally not too bad at rows 70 and 71. You will get a reasonably constant stream of passing traffic, but that is par for the course almost anywhere in the economy cabin of a long-haul flight.
c) the gentle wagging of the tail
This is minimal under smooth conditions, and some find it helps with sleeping. But you will feel turbulence a little more than someone sitting over the wings. But if you think of the aircraft's centre of gravity as being the pivot point for the "wagging" (i.e. close to the centre of the wings), then those sitting in row 1 are going to be feeling the same (but opposite direction) wagging, and we know that lots of people like to be sitting up near row 1!
d) last to de-plane / present at immigration.
Yes, this can be a concern. However, you will be spending something like 20 hours sitting on the plane and maybe 15-20 mins queuing for immigration. Which is most significant? And note that most people who get off the aircraft first and through immigration quickly end up standing waiting at the baggage carousel for their bags anyway.

I would certainly consider those seats if travelling with 2 kids. The alternative is a block of 4 seats in the middle. But most kids like to have a window seat so the middle block is not going to be overly kid friendly.

Down the back is fine... a little extra with the bumps, noise not much if any different unless you are well forward of the wings.
I hate being last for immigration at airports where my priority tagged bags will be waiitng for me... but with the exception of a few airports that is not often a concern since bags take longer than me to get there :)

I think 70/71 seem like good seats.

Great feedback - many thanks. We'll go with 70/71. Almost begs the question of whether to try to get the same on the way home, but a window seat is less interesting during a long night flight and I can't resist a ride on the A380.
