Best Qantas Upgrade Option

Hi

I am booked on a cheap fare that I can't use points to upgrade and was wondering what is the best option.

MEL - LAX - QF 093
LAX - DEN - QF 4773

DEN - LAX - UA1122
LAX - BRIS - QF 016
Bris - PER - QF589

Not sure of class but costs to upgrade are as follows.

full economy (Y) - $1,242 then 72,000 points to upgrade to business
Premium economy - $2,385 then 45,000 points to upgrade to business.

Which one will give me the best option of getting a business upgrade.

Welcome to AFF donnagoddard. Getting an upgradable fare is just one part of the equation. What is your QFF status? Unless you are Platinum (WP here) or maybe Gold (SG) then you probably wont have much chance of the upgrade coming through even if you do have an eligible fare class.

Thank you. I have just dropped down to silver on QF but I have gold with Cathay which I don't think will make a difference. Booked thru Qantas. Maybe I should just pay to fly PE.

So you've already paid once for your original discount whY ticket, then upgrading to a higher fare (which carries no guarantee of being able to use your points to upgrade to J) is like paying a second time, then if you were successful with the upgrade you're paying a third time by burning your points.

I would stay put in whY having paid the cheapest fare I could then pre-allocate the best seat available to you (no charge for PS) eg 80A or 80K on the A380 or maybe 70A or 70K on the B744, which is the 2nd row of two seats towards the aft of economy.

Hang on to the points for a J redemption for your next trip which is a sure thing not a lottery such as a partner award on FJ NAN/LAX 72,000 or 36,000 plus about AUD100.00 in taxes pp one way for J or Y respectively or NAN/HNL 50,000 or 25,000 for J or Y. Taxes ex the US are only USD2.50 per person.

Just buy a separate ticket ex Aust to NAN & return.
