My family (2A, 2C) will be travelling from Brisbane to North America in early December 2007 for about 6 weeks. We plan to spend most of the time in Toronto, including Christmas, and also visit San Francisco and New York. Does anyone have any suggestions regarding the most cost effective way for us to make this trip? We don't have any firm dates for internal travel with USA/Canada and we are open to purchasing North American flights internally after arrival if it is to our advantage. Your ideas are appreciated.

Cheapest will probably be BNE-HNL on Jetstar. Purchase the other flights online from aa.com or similar.

If you're visiting a lot of a cities, a RTW ticket may be worth it.

YMMV, best to ask a travel agent like bestflights.com.au though.

What class of travel? If business class then a circle pacific would seem ideal. Otherwise I'd do separate tickets Oz to west coast/HNL and another for the inter-north america flights.

On UA & QF, New York is usually the same price as the west coast, so it may be worth doing one booking to NY with a stopover in LA, and then doing separate flights to YYZ from NY & SFO from LA (or just flying into NY & out of SFO on either airline). Another interesting option may be flying Air Tahiti Nui to NYC and returning out of LA, purchasing separate North America flights.

I would definately recommend AA.com for your US flights.

Register now for their e-newsletters now and you can wait for a sale and then book.

In my experience, booking this way will also mean that you will get less security hassles.

AA often have very good prices for economy class travel via NRT (using QF to NRT) to most AA destinations in the USA.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I'll keep you posted on the results.
