We are heading to Bangkok tomorrow for 4 days. Its our first time to Thailand

Any tips on must see sights and shopping. We don't want to do too much, as we are travelling with our 2 year old so want to take it easy.

Go see the Royal Palace, the reclining Buddha, take a boat trip along the river, maybe see the floating markets, have a drink in one of numerous roof top bars....
for shopping - either head to one of upmarket shopping centres on or near Siam Square (Paragon and the like) or hit markets (e.g. Chatuchak Market)

First where are you staying, and what time arriving.

If in the evening peak - Bangkok city traffic is horrendous - and if near a BTS stop I would recommend that (even with a 2 y/o) --- otherwise just have plenty of snacks/ water etc for the taxi trip
Don't bother with Makassan Station - traffic from there is just as bad (took me 90min from Makassan to the aLoft on soi 7 last time)

Shopping Wise - Siam Paragon is the fanciest, but others closer to your hotel might be more convenient, MBK is the main discount/knockoff mall
Sites - Agree Royal Palace is worth a trip, and it will be open despite what the scammers will say.

And yes the rooftop bars (of which there are now 20+ - a list here)

I would agree on the train, traffic is horrendous in BKK and train is very good, so get train into town to near BTS stop and the taxi from there.

We arrive in BKK at 6am, have arranged car transfers through Hilton Millennium.

Where is the best place to buy clothes for my 2 year old? Also is it easy to find clothes in aussie sizes.

Depends what you mean by aussie sizes.Large sizes not so easy but can be found in the upmarket malls eg Paragon or Central World.
We often bought small childrens clothing at Robinson's-several branches.Often really good French kid's clothes at a reasonable price.

Taxi a good choice to that location. It's on the river so definitely boat to Royal Palace.

Sirocco on the other side of the river will be closest of the high restaurant/bars, although the Hilton has a decent one

I have been L to XL when in Bangkok and generally only find a few things.
For larger sizes the US is the best place for shopping.Great range,good quality and cheap prices.Their sales are great.You can often buy genuine brand names for less than Asian knockoffs.

Depends which of the two Hilton hotels you refer to. If Hilton Sukhumvit, there's one very good one very close. It's on Soi Ruam Rudee, adjacent to Novotel Ploenchit. Easiest way is to locate the 7-11 store. The laundry is around the corner from it. Just turn corner from 7-11 and at the end of the CUL-de-sac you'll find it. Cost is extremely reasonable. Delivery next day.

Unless you count the Millenium Hilton executive lounge I have not done any of the touristy things you mention above. In fact I have not done touristy things in Bangkok for a long time. Sad.

I have been to Bangkok about a dozen times - and after sightseeing the first handful of times - I now usually just prefer to shop, eat, relax by the hotel pool, pre-dinner drinks at one of the many roof top bars, dinner, then more drinks at a bar / club and head to a 'disco-teque'. I am getting a bit old 'age' wise to be heading to the discoteques hahaha but I still enjoy them. I am off to Siem Reap and Chiang Mai later this week so hope to see a bit more than usual
