I came across this RFID Bag Tag product looking at the Future Travel Experience Website
Lufthansa have rolled it out Lufthansa Group rolls out electronic bag tags with BAGTAG partnership and China Southern are about to roll it out too China Southern Airlines to roll out electronic bag tags
The cost is EUR89

Meanwhile, BA have rolled out Viewtag British Airways to introduce reusable RFID bag tags for a mere GBP80 a pop.

I was thinking these are sensible alternatives to the QANTAS Bagtag/Coaster, noting the challenges people like myself have attaching paper, and waste that goes with paper, but the price for entry is steep. Has anybody here had experience with the tags, and should we be lobbying airlines here to adopt the technology?

looks good.I wonder how well it attaches to the suitcase.
The video on the BAGTAG site suggests it cannot be reused. On soft bags - Backplate screwed into fabric with and then attached via 3M sticky stuff, and attached via 3M double sided tape onto hard bags. It can also be used on bagstraps, where the strap is surrounded.

The BA version attaches to the handle.

I'm guessing that glitches will crop up with these tags, as occurs with all the electronic bag tracking/locating gadgets which just don't work reliably in practice - simply because smartphone signals/wifi are not 100% reliable around the world.
Given that you can change the tags from your iPhone, any failure of your phone to link to the tag could result in either a loss of information on the tag or an inability to change from one flight's details to another.
