Which baggage allowance would be applied two SIN-BNE leg in the following case, please:
Australia - Europe return trip, booked in economy, marketed & ticketed by Finnair and all flights are AY codeshares, flights from/to Australia on QF and from Asia to & within Europe on AY.

Finnair sent an email offer a few days ago for upgrading the HEL-SIN leg to business which I took (for 348€ it's a nice offer). Their checked baggage allowance is naturally higher but what'll be the allowance for the SIN-BNE on QF?
I've called both Qantas and Finnair call centres and both say the QF economy allowance applies on the latter leg. Would this really be the case??? And what would happen if 2*23 kg were checked in, they would not just toss the other baggage out in SIN, would they?

Are they all on the one ticket? If so, the "most significant carrier" rule applies, which would be Finnair - and Finnair's allowance. But did you only upgrade on the return leg, not the onward leg? If going BNE-SIN-HEL all in Y, then the Y allowance applies for that travel.

Coming back, in J, the Finnair J allowance applies. No, QF will not throw one of your bags away!

And what would happen if 2*23 kg were checked in, they would not just toss the other baggage out in SIN, would they?

They won't throw one of the bags away... if you are only entitled to one bag, they simply won't check-in or carry the extra bag from your starting point unless you pay the excess baggage charge.

What's the AY allowance given for J HEL/SIN?

Note that as your eticket was originally issued in the ticketed class of economy with the AY one piece (at 23kg) allowance you may need to remind AY that you are entitled to the AY J allowance which will apply to both HEL/SIN and SIN/BNE as mentioned by John Phelan above.

What reservations are telling you (re y allowance for SIN/BNE) is incorrect however I'm not entirely surprised as the majority of res people have never worked at airports in operational roles.
