Just spotted this - BBC NEWS | UK | Airports 'not ready' for changes

Several of the UK's main airports do not yet have permission to ease the one-piece cabin baggage restriction next month, the government has said. The Department for Transport has said more than one piece will be allowed after 7 January, provided airports have purchased improved security scanners.

So far 19 airports have been given permission to relax the rule.

But several airports including Gatwick, Leeds Bradford and Edinburgh have yet to meet the required standards.
Should make life easier for hand luggage only travellers through the UK - just avoid LGW and the others that can't handle two peices of hand luggage...

Just avoid the UK. You've been there recently, haven't you. I have.

I have - and I will be there again on the 19th - there are some things in this world that you just cant avoid...

I may have 4-5 trips there in the next few months... thankfully I will be in and out of LHR which has been cleared. A shame the article does not flag that the largest and busiest airport in the UK which is also the most used as a transit point has had the restrictions lifted but I guess good news doesnt sell..

I agree, someone posted the OP's link several days ago in another thread, and no mention of LHR. SO I went to BA website and nothing mentiones about the 2 bag rule, but today its up and running confriming the 2 bag rule from the 7th, just in time for my trip:D

British Airways - Hand baggage

If my potential secondment to the UK happens this will be a real boon. I will be popping home for a few days a few times so will just need hand luggage (which will include food stuffs from the UK to bring back to Oz :)) to come back to Oz.

here's an article on it:

Confusion as some UK airports ease one-bag rules

And Gatwick, Britain's second-busiest airport after Heathrow, now has a two-bag rule at the South Terminal but retains the one-bag rule at the North Terminal until February 11.

"Different rules for different airlines and airports means that it is essential passengers check the situation before they fly," said Neil Pakey, deputy chairman of the Airport Operators' Association.

"If in doubt, passengers should make sure that they only take on board items of baggage needed in the aircraft cabin."

Now that is a little ridiculous - different rules for the same airport????

I like that on BA flights you're now allowed 23kg's of hand luggage providing you can lift it into the overhead locker. That's another whole suitcase of weight on British Airways. :p

I travelled through LHR T4 today and can tell you the following;

1) Fast track screening doesn't oprn til 0600hrs, so too late for QF9.

2) No need to take laptops out of bags now. Thats right folks, the days of having to remoe the computer are over at LHR. You still have totake off your shoes though.

It wasn't optional today, there was a sign up saying everyone to remove shoes

Actually thats reminds me, I had exactly the same clothes on when passing through MEL, SIN and LHR. The only diff was I took my belt off at LHR, but the walk through buzzed, so I got the pat down service:shock: . So dont know what was happening there.

Excellent - less chance of leaving it behind now :)
hahaha, lets hope so ;)

I guess with the shoes maybes its no mandatory, i havn't been through in few months so it must have changed and been signed posted that way, which atleast makes people expect it rather than being "you may be required to remove your shoes" and people being annoyed when its them who gets asked to remove.
