British Airways (BA) claims to be the first carrier in Europe to allow passengers to use their personal electronic devices (PED) throughout all flight phases. Effective Dec. 19, BA passengers can use their handheld electronic devices during taxi, take-off and landing, as long as they are set to “flight mode.” BA said it secured clearance for the policy change from the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) after demonstrating it complies with all existing safety rules.

Flew on the 19th and the announcement was made several times "Starting today ....". Interestingly personal headphones could also be used at all times - including during the safety briefing.

Re: British Airways allows in-flight use of electronic devices for takeoff/landing

And how, pray tell, will the FAs know when a device is in 'flight mode'?

With the current system, they still don't know, but OFF is OFF during the (apparently) critical phases of the flight take off and landing. As its hard enough to get many pax even to turn their phones off, what chance of them turning to flight mode before take-off?

Can't wait to hear the chorus of 'beep-beeps' of voice mail and SMS messages arriving as we approach landing. And of course the inevitable calling back to retrieve the message. FAs won't even know (all strapped in), except for the first couple of rows of pax.
