Anyone know if the Australian consulate accept walk in passport applications? I need to get one for my kids but they couldn't get me an appointment till next week - 3 days before I'm due to fly! Anyone know of anyway of getting around this?

If you have a need for an emergency passport tell this to them and they will discuss it with you. It may be hard to get a passport that quickly, especially overseas but if there is a genuine need then they can arrange travel documents in the interim.

Oh and welcome to AFF.

I'm due for a passport replacement. It doesn't expire till late 2014 but I've run out of pages! I do have 2 weeks in Australia coming up, so I need to consider whether it's feasible to get done in this time.. or whether I'm better to just sort it out here (London)!

All I need to do now is find a suitable place to get a photo taken as the usual option here isn't suitable: https://www.passports.gov.au/Web/Requirements/Photos.aspx

If you have your passport replaced in Australia it takes about ten working days from when the passport office receive all your information. You can pay extra for a priority service and it should take about two days to have your passport ready (add on a few days to have your passport posted back to you etc).

So if you are here for two weeks you will be cutting it fine to have your new passport in hand before you leave the country if you just use the regular service.

Naturally YMMV as the last time I renewed my passport I had it in my hand in just over a week. Naturally I wasn't in a rush I was just renewing my passport as a matter of course. Given that you will be pushed for time Murphy's Law says that your passport won't be delivered to you until you have left the country ;) should you choose to use the regular service.

Agree completely. Price over here looks to be the same anyway, so may just do it here once I'm back..

The passport office express option is two days with collection available from their office on the second day, doing it online then present at aus post means they already have the data. My recent experience at xmas was 48 hours and that was non express.

My one and only dealing with an express was with a friend who lost her passport. Applied 2pm one day, had a phone call at 9am the next saying I hadn't signed something on her form (was doing the photos etc) so I got email copy, scanned and sent back. She picked it up at 11am. Was amazingly prompt for any government department.

If it's urgent they can often have it done quicker than the 2 days as well.

I had my passport stolen in a burglary a few days before I was heading overseas. I lodged a new application at DFAT in CBR in the morning and got an email 2 hours later saying it was ready.

And as they produce passports in the UK does mean less shipping hassle.

In Australia go to a Post Office for the photo ($16.95), just make sure they use a digital camera and not the old Polaroid.
There are very few that still use the Polaroid but worth checking. Photo takes 2 or 3 minutes to produce.
If you are going to renew in Australia you can print a renewal form on line www.passports.gov.au just make sure you print the form single sided, A4 and that no text is missing on the form. Current fee is AUD $238 for a regular 32 page or $358 for a 64 page frequent (AFF? :)) traveller passport plus $105 if you want priority issue. If you renew o/s I am not sure if form is different.

Yep, prices are the same here. 32 pages *should* do me for 5 years... as I don't get stamps when I enter / leave the UK or Australia now. I might get my photo done in Australia though. $16.95.. risen a bit since I had mine done 3 years ago for $10, although I did use a photo shop (do they still exist? ;)) to do mine.

Well Australia post does charge a large price for photos, but they know what they are doing and check it on the spot using a guage to try and ensure it won't be rejected by passports.

Tried one of the dodgy passport booths in the UK the other day. Uggh. The photo wouldn't be suitable for anything official.

Either you're doing it wrong.. or coughpy booth! I've used the one at Victoria station twice now and both times have provided decent photos. ;)

Ahh but passports are for 10 years ;)

I've had a passport renewed for me in less than 24hrs (ready 9am next day), by going straight to the passport office and explaining the situation
