Well, here's a surprise. Buy the cheapest fare on Etihad, that isn't eligible for upgrades, and they send you an offer anyway!

They describe it as "upselling" your original fare to an upgradeable one, then bidding for the upgrade, but it's all encompassed in the same offer.

A bit steep though - Dublin to Abu Dhabi minimum bid is about $1130 and Abu Dhabi to Sydney minimum bid is about $1785. Double that and add the original fare, and it's well over $7000, or well into the ballpark of buying the Business Class fare in the first place.

So I have filed it under "why bother"...

Have a work-funded trip to Europe coming up in the next few days and received an email from EY asking if I wanted to bid for an upgrade from J to F. Decided to bid for the homeward leg between AUH and MEL - especially given that the a380 (and therefore Apartments) will not be available on the MEL-AUH flights, post October.

Has anyone had any experience with these bids and (if its not too personal) what did you pay?
I've bid $1200 - against a minimum of $995 and a max of $1740.
