Hey All,

I am flying over to AKL with Emirates next week, and then returning later that afternoon on the Dreamliner with JQ - just wondering what they general process is when transferring at Auckland (i will be travelling HLO).

I assume that i need to clear customs and check in landside at the JQ counter?

If anyone has any other tips/tricks that would be great, as i am slightly concerned due to the almost constant late running of EK406 lately (though i should still have ample time - would appreciate not having to run, and have a drink in the lounge before the flight back!)

Thanks,
Will

Scheduled EK arrival is 145pm, and JQ departs at 515pm (415pm check in closes)

Of late EK is arriving around 1 hour late, giving me 1hr30min to make check in.

Generally Immigration/Customs for Oz residents is pretty quick at AKL. I would not be too concerned (barring unusual circumstances).

As you leave the immigration area upon exiting the doors and are facing the crowds awaiting incoming passenger turn right - there's a small exit being way to avoid those throngs and put you in the general direction to the check-in counters.

Would it be possible for the OP to just pass through transit security and receive a BP for the JQ flight at the transfer desk?

I dont think you will not need to exit landslide. There is a transfer point, which may be a small distance walk if you land at gates 15 or 16. If you land at any other gate you will walk past it on your right hand side

I am aware of the transfer point, but as we all know, nothing is a given with JQ - this is why i'm wondering if anyone has a similar experience?

I did a MEL-AKL-MEL same day return on EK, got both boarding passes in Melbourne, and simply passed through security and back into the departures hall the other week - this is where different airlines and separate tickets create a grey area.

Provided you have checked in for your JQ flight and have a boarding pass I am quite sure the transit staff will not discriminate against you because of this.

Unfortunately, with international flights, OLCI does not issue a boarding pass - so i would have to etiher go thtough the JQ check in counter in AKL, or be able to have my boarding pass issued at the transfer desk.

The transfer desk, and where you transit the international terminal are completely separate.

The "Transit" area is somewhat of a joke, i didn't even need to show my BP when i went through the other week, essentially anyone could clear that security point and be back in departures.

In the bad old days, there was never any problem with arriving and departing pax mixing, the only reason for transit security is that countries don't trust other countries security protocols for flights departing from that country.

That said, it could be a pain to transit to departures only to find out that there is no desk which could help you with JQ departures. Of course, you could always try at JQ desk in AU prior to departing for AKL to get boarding passes. Although that may raise some eyebrows.

That 'joke' is no different from MEL, SYD or BNE not needing BP's.

I do agree with the vagaries of JQ - while you may be able to get a BP at the gate, it's too risky. They may have offloaded the PAX before they open the gate as the JQ staff do the check in landside, then after that closes, proceeding airside to run the gate.

Could you OLCI before leaving MEL and use the transfer point?

That would be the question.

I would try and not go land side but if you have to customs and immigration is easy in NZ anyway.
