Just wondering what others would recommend in terms of 4 or 5* hotels in downtown Auckland that give decent bang for your buck (inc. loyalty program points of course).

I've stayed at the Hilton. It's a nice place even if it's a bit out of the way.

+1 for Hilton. Fantastic experience all around and reasonable rates.

Don't go Crowne Plaza downtown. Very lacking.

Hyatt Auckland but make sure you ask for a Residence wing room (new wing) the rooms in the original building are looking a bit tatty and are fairly pokey

If you wanted to splurge and have a cracker of a time I’d say Mollies any day ;) but, to answer your question, I would also cast a vote for the Hilton. The rooms are on the small side, but you get a balcony with a view of the water (at least on the water side of the building) plus the restaurant, White?, is (was) one of Auckland’s rated places to eat. I’ve tried the Westin a couple of times but, while the rooms were nice, the customer service was pretty bad and I hear it has continued to go downhill.

Note that the Hyatt Auckland was rebranded to a Pullman overnight.

thanks for the feedback. We've actually been considering Hilton and Crowne Plaza this all very useful!

We loved the Westin - beautiful room (and the heavenly beds are awesome - much better in NZ and Oz than the ones in the US), and the service was excellent. That was about 2 years ago though, so a post up above indicates that may have changed.

Aside from the fact it's not right in the CBD... The Langham has always been pretty good. If you can, get a room on the floor the Club lounge is on as it makes things a bit easier!

For budget.. Crowne Plaza is OK really. Not much on offer in the club lounge. My "friend" who was staying there at the same time as me, managed to score a "free" bottle of Sav. Blanc each night!

I stayed at the Crowne Plaza about 12 months ago- managed to snag a good deal from wotif.

As we were only staying 2 nights and spent the majority of the time sightseeing and simply slept there, it was located close enough to the harbour and other amenities to suit our needs.

Nice Thai restaurant attached, if that's your thing.

have booked the Hilton as it got so many recommendations! trying to get to gold plus they have the any weekend sale on still. thanks again for the advice!

Getting this thread up again - and wondering if anyone has any 1st hand experinces with the Pullman? (RIP Hyatt Regency :()

I read all the negative comments (and I am no Accor fan either, and A Club is a joke I agree), but was wondering how bad could it be? For example we had a wonderful stay at the Pullman Reef Resort Cairns last August. And I don't fancy club access or status points at all (at least with hotels), rather prefer a good and clean hotel in a good location, with good service at an affordable rate.

Now we are planning to go to AKL for Easter and I am getting a good rate (at least it seems good to me) via one of the European online travel agencies which I use quite often, at NZ$192 per night for what they call "Suite regency view king" including breakfast for two.

I couldn't find anything on the Pullman site nor anywhere else what to expect about "Suite regency view king", so maybe anyone of the former Hyatt guests can shed some light what this might be?

Many thanks!
