Auckland for 3 full days

Hi All

Arr late Thursday night 25th April and return Monday 29th in the afternoon to Melbourne. Looking at staying at the Hilton down on the Quay. Have 3 full days and not sure whether to just do Auckland of hire a car stay overnight and drive south to Lake Taupo or North to ? Any suggestions welcome as our first time there and would love to sample some lovely scenery.

Drive north to the Bay of Island's and surrounding area , but that is through the city
Beware that for long weekends the traffic in Auckland is horrendous

Thanks Think we will just base ourselves in Auckland this time and see as much as we can if city and surrounds. Cannot bear the thought of getting caught in traffic

Traffic should be OK Fri 26th and Monday 29th. Late afternoon on Sunday 28th into Auckland from the south or north will not be pleasant (being polite). Like in Aust last long weekend for some time.
Better access to the airport from the south.
