Asiana Airlines - any advice?

The question of actual aircraft flown is confusing. I booked (via QF codeshare) SYD - ICN and return end of August 2017, and appeared to be smartium. I tried a dummy booking on the OZ website, and clikcing on details does show a 777-L 3 class config with smartium, but both Expertflyer and QF booking page show 777-200 with 2-2-2 configuration.

I'd probably go with the OZ booking site. Third party systems (such as QF) may just be picking up the aircraft designator (777) without the nuances of different models which the airline may operate. Another example of this is thai's 777s... third party sites may just show '773', when the TG site is more specific as to whether it's a 77W (full flats) or 773 (angled flats).

Contacted the OZ SYD office, outbound is old J and return is Smartium. I can live with that as the return is overnight.

Asiana has my vote one of the best in a number of areas. A few years ago, when I went through some personal issues, I really stuffed up a booking and effectively had a "no show" as I was day out. QF at MEL said bad luck pay again, and as I didn't have the onward SYD to ICN I had to get my luggage and sprint to International. OZ could not be more helpful as soon as I got there late, about to beg, etc,. Not one word about the no show, bought me out a drink, towel, as i was checking in. Got me on the plane and not one mention of payment, as they had full right to. Not sure if it would have happening in I was travelling in Y or flying with QF. They have my vote for customer service.

Agree with this for sure.

I flew Business class with Asiana Sydney-Seoul-Paris and London-Seoul-Sydney. There was a one-night stopover at the carrier's expense on the outward journey, but I was offered no choice of hotel. It turned out to be in the centre of Seoul, a long bus trip away from the (magnificent) airport, at a deeply average hotel. I would in retrospect have been better off at one of the airport-area hotels.
Flights were excellent, all on Boeing 777s.

I flew Asiana in June from Osaka to Seoul, and then Seoul to Saigon in Y.

Being tall and a bit wide I thought I might be a bit cramped, but it was a good flight for me..... :)

So we are two flights in of our 4 legs on OZ in Y - and wow, what an experience - the food, the seats, the staff - all amazing.

We are due back in about a week, flying on the new Airbus A350, so will be interesting to see what it is like!

I have cousins coming in J from LHR - ICN - SYD - CBR. Any on board advice I should pass on? Who should they credit to? Thanks

If they have an existing star alliance they should perhaps credit there. If they are just starting out, or only have a low balance in their existing star FF program, perhaps consider Lifemiles.

Lifemiles allows award redemption at 40% base, and top up at heavily discounted rates after that. So it might be that a flight to australia gives enough for the base of a transatlantic trip in the future.
