So a month or so ago transferred some Avios to Qatar (via BA) from our US based Amex card during a 30% BA Avios transfer bonus, in anticipation of booking a Bali-Return on Garuda when plans firmed up for next year. Understood it is a little speculative transferring as such, but worst case will have some Avios and they will get used eventually.
Went to book 2 adults, 1 child and an infant via QR and got disconnected at payment page. No biggie, seats disappeared but figure back in few hours. Either way there were plenty of seats on the days either side.
I decided to go via QR Live Chat to see if they could find the booking but they informed me there that it’s not possible to book an infant on
any partner reward. I queried them on it and the referred me to Point 3 here:
And sure enough, cant do it
Well this puts a screw in the plans. Did some research and it is the same issue when booking via Flying Blue, one person who had booked through them had had success calling Garuda Sydney office to add an infant to a flying blue redemption on Garuda, but paying 10% of the cash fare (would be ~$300).
I gave them a call and they said only Qatar can add it if booking is through them.
Ok Plan B, again a little risky but calculated.
So I booked 1x adult with the infant via Virgin Atlantic who do allow partner infant bookings, then booked 1 x Adult and 1 x Child via QR on the same flights to use most of the Avios and the carrier charges are a lot lower (~$170 for adult vs ~$300 on VS). Luckily had more MR points to send to VS who charge 5k points per direction for the infant
I double checked how many seats available via both platforms before attempting. And booked Vs first to lock the infant in as that was causing the issue.
Not ideal being on two separate bookings but we will see what happens! More than capable if do have to be split up under IRROPS or something
Anyway a word of warning for any infant bookings via QR! (except on their own flights)
I do note that when looking up the flights on QR it always showed the infant as bookable with the standard 10% of Avios required so there were no red flags there
