Even before YouTube existed, I have heard QF cabin managers asking pax not to take photos of staff or other passengers without their permission.

Arguably the VA condition is more restrictive - you could still film a QF flight for commercial reasons (eg youtuber) as long as you don't show other pax or staff. The VA condition would not permit this at all.

There's so many people trying to make a living out of YouTube airline reviews, I imagine it's becoming a problem for a lot of airlines and pax.

There could also be Privacy Act implications in filming people on a flight without consent, which, depending on the circumstances, could be illegal.

I would imagine that one of the things that QANTAS is trying to do here is to ensure that they can’t be entangled in any privacy breach by not having clearly provided their consent for filming to be undertaken on what is ostensibly their property.

I remember taking a photo of a crew member once doing a safety check for some competition or other. It didn't include their face. But I was questioned by the flight manager and showed the photo which was OK by them.

From what I've seen online, many of the customer poor form behaviour pics are from flight crew or ex flight crew.

It really bugs me how many people film everything lately. Especially other peoples mis-fortune. Just so they can be first to post it on their preferred social media platform.

There seems to be an increasingly large demographic that are interested only in filming and posting rather than helping the person having a bad day. Or filming the drama unfolding next to them instead of intervening.

I don't mind being on the odd photo or even taking some, but it needs to be with approval of anyone involved.

Drives me nuts actually! Hopefully only a small minority.

As someone who travels with their GoPro I do find this change concerning as I tend to mount the GoPro to the window when flying to capture some nice plane cough for my trip reports. Will this not be allowed?

I also question how enforceable these rules are. For instance their limitation on the use of electronic devices does not exclude critical medical devices from the regulation. Is Qantas really allowed to force a type 1 diabetic to switch off their insulin pump during a flight? Seems unconstitutional (supposing Australia has one)

This has been known for years where journalists and media people just stand back from incidents and offer no help whatsoever. They were "only doing their job"!

KLM also have the policy of no photos or videos of the crew or other passengers without permission due to privacy reasons. It was also announced on board our recent KLM flight.

I totally agree with this decision, I always feel annoyed for other passengers who are clearly not happy to be filmed. Some aviation vloggers, e.g Nonstop Dan, go to lengths to ensure people aren't filmed (at least in recent years) but some dont care at all.

I wonder how many of these vloggers/youtubers actually ask for consent. Not many I think.

It is all about context ....
Setting up and filming takeoff / landing camera pointing outside for personal use- OK
Filming crew serving you wine at dinner etc- ask before filming.
Filming content your YouTube or other type of pages - in some cases could come under "commercial" and not for personal use.
Filming random people you find sexy etc- creepy and not allowed.

2023.. common sense is no longer common.
