Around the world using AAdvantage Points

Can anyone advise how many points are needs to do - SYD - JFK - LHR - SYD?

My partner and I are condsidering doing this itinerary in Dec / Jan. I am thinking of using my AAdvantage miles for his ticket. Then buying my own ticket to earn more miles and hopefully go Platinum.

I have around 92,000 miles, he has 10,000. Thinking of transferring his miles to me and buying extra miles if necessary.

Any advice greatfully received.

For miles needed look at the AA web site.

However the chances of getting a reward flight are very very low. Dec Jan is peak travel period. People book rewards 353(QF) or 330(AA) days out at for that time. If you do not use QF may have a small chance.

Your itinerary is around 24,000 miles so you need a ZONE 7 OneWorld award (20,001 to 25,000 miles). This costs 120,000 miles for economy, 150,000 miles for Business Class and 230,000 miles for First Class.

As mtlockie notes, availability may be a problem for the premium cabins, but should not be too hard for economy awards.

AA does not have many options for transferring points between members. They have the option to Gift miles or Share Miles with a family member. However, there are certain fees and conditions that apply. To share 10,000 miles will cost US$100.
