I'm sure everyone knows to check Argus car hire (or Ryanair, who use the same engine) when renting in Europe.
I have done so for years and always found them to be a minimum of 25-40% less than the company website (Hertz, Avis etc)

Tonight, I booked a Thrifty car through Ryanair (as it was the cheapest option) and went on the Thrifty website to check the cross border fees, which weren't mentioned on Ryanair booking document. I had to do a dummy run to get to that screen and guess what.... Thrifty were ¢2 cheaper with no cross border charge, so I immediately cancelled the Ryanair booking.
Now I know that ¢2 is bugger all, but for me it is the principle - they clearly state on their website that they will be the cheapest etc etc.
I don't even care if I lose more than 2 Euros with the out and in exchange rate on my Visa card, I'm not giving those mongrels any of my money

Moral of the story - check the company websites !!

Happy travels

Never used Argus other than in Los Angeles. It works ok there.
We are ok with public transport in UK and there is a nasty tax in central London for cars so we don’t bother in the city.

I've used Argus quite widely (N America, S America, Europe, IIRC even southern Africa) over a long period and generally found them to be the least expensive - even when I check the rental car companies.

I do tend to book a very long way ahead, which may help.
