Just about to book a trip BNE-EMD. Both QF and DJ depart BNE at 05:45, however QF, with the Dash 8-400 get into EMD 30 mins earlier than DJ with the ATR 72-500. (1:25 vs. 1:55). On the return, the ATR picks up 10 mins, but is still 20 mins slower than the Dash 8.

Is the ATR really 30% slower than the D8?

Wow, so they are 30% slower. When looking at day returns, that is a whole hour you loose!

I guess that is why DJ are $500 and QF $700 (only full flexi's available for both).

You need to remember that on these short hops, most time is spent in the climb, not in cruise, which I think was the argument for DJ opting for the slower planes over their smaller ERJs

VA may also have padded thier schedule somewhat introducing a new a/c type and new destination so in practive the difference may be less than the full 30 mins.
