I haven't booked flights on the QF website before that are operated by Emirates so I was wondering if there are any tips and tricks - eg timing of sales, maximising SC's and QFF miles earnt, lounge access etc etc - will be booking Melbourne to Cairo via Dubai - all in Y.

It might be different for different routes but pay careful attention to what the cost is on EK website.

I only really look at SIN-MEL route but I’m consistently finding recently (last 6 months) that QF code on EK metal about $200-300 more (in most recent booking, I made on Friday it was $900 vs $600) than same flights booked as EK code on EK metal. Although this may be route specific as the two carriers compete.

The other tip, once you are booked, is to access the Emirates website, using your Qantas booking number, as this will allow you to select seats and meal etc. not possible though the Qantas site.

If earning QF SC/To maximise QF SC earn, make 1000% sure as many of your flights carry a QF flight number, on EK metal.
Flying QF flight number on EK metal is more expensive, but flying on an EK flight number and EK metal as a QFF member earns no QF SC.
Some EK routes do not ever carry a QF flight number.

Yes we got that one for our trip next month. Flying into STN, as I have friends in that part of the UK, and saving a fortune in accommodation and ground costs at the expense of only earning QF SC from AUS to DBX.

Many thanks everyone for the information - sounds like the devil is in the detail! I am going to have limted time available in my next QFF year so need to make sure that I bank some SC's on this trip to help with requalification.

When Emirates have sales in fares is that when the Qantas website also has sales for QF flights on Emirates metal or do QF run their own sales independant of Emirates?

Not sure on that one, so can't say for sure when either have their sales, or if its coordinated, or separate.
If there is a bit of time, there is the option of going from DXB to DOH with QR, and then from DOH to CAI with QR, as QR is a member of OW, a QFF flyer flying QR will earn QF SC.
One way Y is 25, flexY is 50, and J is 100 QF SC.
Not sure if EK on the DXB to CAI route carries the QF flight number or not, just had a look at the QFF Qpoints and QF SC calculator.

Would like to know how that is possible when QR suspended all flights to Saudia Arabia, UAE, Egypt and Bahrain a couple of years ago

I did notice that some of the EK flights from DXB to CAI had QF flight numbers when I looked on the QF website. It would be interesting to compare the SC's.

I believe I that to be the case as well, an option I saw was to fly back to Muscat and then to DXB but haven't kept tabs on it lately.
