I know Air NZ has published fares for LHR-LAX-AKL-<Australia>, but wondering if there are any published by OW.

Currently trying to sort out my trek back to Oz, so the additional luggage allowance would be nice.

I'll probably end up booking a Oneway ticket on an Qantas A380 via Singapore/Sydney (works out not much more than 1/2 of a return), but looking for other options.

I can't imagine that ow would have marketed routings complete from LHR/Europe to Australia via US, but can always try.

try AA.com and see what fares they have available; then you would have 2PC allowance for the trip

Otherwise BA may be a good choice since they allow 1PC std plus an additional piece or 2 is not too bad in price. If prepaid the cost is GBP32 for 1st additional piece plus GBP72 for the next 9 pieces. Gets the allowance to 63Kg for GBP105

I can see a BA fare published for travel UK -> SWP that allows routing through the US .. the fare is valid through to 20/06/2010 and costs around £640 including taxes. Fare code is LLBBGBOW. Does that help?

The BA allowance is the same regardless of route taken however, if going via USA this will involve switching carriers and cannot use the BA purchase extra bags allowane to increase allowance on the onward carrier so could be hit for more excess fess for US-AU

Somewhere around the 20-24 June range.

Already did some checks on AA website. It doesn't want to give a cheap quote for that travel. I'll keep checking though. Ideally I'd fly AA to LAX/NYC and then Qantas back to Brisbane. Additional baggage with BA is pretty good. I wonder if I can get over hating them long haul!

Thanks. I've found the fare rules and can't see the routing through the U.S. Maybe I need to have a fresh look in the morning (my time!).

Look for the one with the base fare of GBP 416.

Thanks for that. Found it now. A bit of a weird fare - Allows travel on BA/QF/CX/EI/BD. Will have to do some more research on it.

It does price up on Opodo which is good!

(And, I am leaning towards that vs a straight BA via Asia. Main reason is as there are no BA flights direct to BNE, I believe the additional luggage allowance wouldn't apply all the way through the journey, and Qantas won't give me extra if on their equipment if on the BA code). If I go direct to SYD, and then book a seperate domestic flight, then have the issue of the 23Kg+15kg again. If I fly Qantas LAX-SYD-BNE or LAX-BNE, I get three pieces @ 23kg IIRC)

I see the fares. They're not cheap, though, although the Kangaroo routes aren't better per se. The latter can be up to 100 quid cheaper; half of those savings will be eclipsed in QF's exorbitant (even prepaid) excess luggage charges, however.

Most fares I'm seeing go via LAX then onto BNE/SYD/MEL, with the latter two destinations being (not surprisingly) cheaper (but almost not in total when you add a domestic sector).

How much are you intending to bring back (i.e. how much over the limit do you estimate you will be)?

I brought over 38kgs checked, and 13-14kg carry-on. Presume that's grown even more now...

Have been doing some more searching on this mixed BA fare, and can get it to route:

LHR-JFK-LAX-MEL-BNE for 110sc / ~ £760 (after 20 June when it goes up by about £140). Still looking to see if I can get it on an A380.

A standard LHR-SIN-MEL-BNE type fare is only 85 sc, but can be had for about £650

Can anyone confirm my logic on baggage limits:
- BA LHR-JFK. One bag, 23kg limit. Can pay £32 for one additional bag, and £72 for a 3rd bag.
- QF JFK-LAX-MEL-BNE. Two bags @ 23kg, plus one additional bag @ 23kg for WP status.

- QF LHR-SIN-MEL-BNE. No limit on bags. 23kg allowance + 15kg WP allowance.

I think that's about what ITA picked up; I couldn't find the routing you found for the price you found, but that's only because I hadn't factored in two stops in the US. Either way, sounds close to the same fare basis and rules that this thread has uncovered.

Looks all correct here.

The prepaid excess charges on QF cost a fortune compared to BA (both on the piece and weight system).

Thanks for the various bits of advice in this thread.

Decided to head back via LHR-JFK-LAX-MEL-BNE (LHR-JFK on BA, rest with Qantas incl A380 LAX-MEL).

Even though I'm leaving after the 20th (but only by a few days!!), I managed to find an S class fare with BA which was a bit cheaper than the post 20th L class fare was.

Also going to overnight @ JFK on the way for a quick break.

I think this will work out well with baggage. Qantas will give me 3 bags @ 23kg, BA 1 bag @ 23kg, reasonably cheap excess luggage and unlimited carry-on weight.

So current plan:
BA to JFK:
1 bag @ 23kg checked.
Perhaps another bag @ 23kgs checked [£32 pre-paid]
1 carry-on @ whatever I can fit into it within the size limits. (This may also contain another smaller carry-on bag).

In JFK, re-arrange bags and use the smaller carry-on (with an appropriate weight around 7-10kg), and check the other 1-2 bags.
