Hi,

Booked Mrs Calgarychris on EK407 AKL-MEL in F. Very jealous as I've never flown EK F before. I have a healthy balance of Amex MR, CX and QF points and am contemplating flying MEL-AKL on VA and then with a 3hr wait in the lounge, joining her on EK407. Cash cost is $182 all up.

People, am I crazy? If I am, I blame all of you. :)

Is it worth it? I'm super keen to try the shower (don't ask...are they still doing the shower on this leg?) and want the Dom '09 and Hennessy Paradis. I don't see us flying EK F (or any F really) again as I can't justify the additional points (and no, the irony of that statement isn't lost on me!)

Thoughts?

Edit: It doesn't help that she says "It *would* be nice to have you along..." :p

If its the Emirates A380, which it seems to be, then yes it should have showers...

And you only live once and sounds like you have plenty of points...

The evening flight back you would get a more interesting meal selection than the morning flights over which are fairly standard breakfast options...

We do these things for fun. Here you're normal.

Do it and you'll never regret it. Don't do it and wonder forever what it would've been like to have this experience.

I loved the shower/

If it were me I'd go MEL-BNE-SYD-AKL or something along those lines and still that's hardly crazy on a frequent flyer forum.

I flew the EK 380 F BNE-DXB-LHR for the first time just after Christmas and I have to say I was underwhelmed...

However, I have flown a very large number of F sectors on other airlines and have stated for the record that F is just not worth the points/money over a decent J class seat (SQ 380 or EY 380 maybe different however).

Little things like EK serving the 'poverty' J Moet in F out of BNE did not help initial impressions however.

The 2009 Dom was served out of DXB however...

Completely agree with TomVexille. Just do it.
It's bugger all points & $182 & you'll get a shower at 40,000 feet. With the shower you will get the amenities kit. Great fun & memories.
The only downer is the AKL lounge is not a true F lounge.

Haha, thanks for the replies you guys. I was expecting a few more dissenters in the group! Some "save for retirement, save for rainy day" types...

You're all terrible influences and should be ashamed of yourselves! :)

Incidentally, for this to work, I need to book on VA166 which arrives at 1520 and then leave on EK407 departing at 1850 - does that work or too tight you reckon?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I've booked the EK leg, so I guess I'm in it to win it. Anyone know how long Flybuys transfers take, I need to top up the VA balance and I'd rather pull from FB rather than Amex MR.

Cheers

Edit: Nevermind, it's instantaneous, but I don't have enough! Amex MR takes 3 business days (does it really?!? Jeez!). Also, do I need to clear customs in AKL if I'm just turning around (no luggage)?

As long as VA166 is on time you should have no problems.

And you might need to be a little insistent to use the shower (but polite of course). Don’t wait for them to offer it but ask to schedule it pretty much on boarding as they are chatting to you.
