Hi all

Just running through some future plans for AA awards and I am little confused about the difference between OW and All Partner airline awards.

From the AA website the following flights would classify as all partner awards:

Example 1: Round-trip award travel between New York and Tel Aviv - - outbound on EL AL and return on Iberia.
Example 2: Round-trip award travel between London and Delhi - - outbound on British Airways and return on Finnair.
Example 3: Round-trip award travel between Los Angeles and Bangkok - - outbound on Cathay Pacific and return on Japan Airlines.
Example 4: Round-trip award travel between Miami and Santiago - - outbound on American Airlines and return on LAN.

Let's say I want to travel to SYD-LCA-SYD. That is similar in the flight above to lax-bkk-lax as it is not possible to do on two simple flights.

So if I had to fly syd-bkk-dxb-bkk-syd on say:

syd-bkk - BA
bkk-dxb - CX
dxb-bkk - CX
bkk-syd - QF

Would this be a OW130C (being 15,454 miles flown) or a 90K all partners award? I know that only gets me to LCA but I could buy a ticket DXB-LCA-DXB

Similarly if I had to fly - syd-hkg-lhr-lca-lhr-hkg-syd on qf/ba/ba would that be a OW190C or a 120K partner award?

This is all based on flying J :)

Cheers

Flying to DXB you can use either award type ; there are different rules to each

syd-hkg-lhr-lca-lhr-hkg-syd

The cost for this will depend on your stopover points. If just stopping in LCA then it will be either a 120k partner or a 130k OW award ( if issued before the rules change in september )

if you want stopovers , then you cannot use the partner award , you need to use the OW award. The cost of OW award will be ( until sept ) based on the distances between stopover points

e.g. SYD-HKG (stop) - LHR (stop) - LCA - LHR (transit) - SYD would be >21k miles so would be 150k for an OW award.

SYD-HKG (stop) - LHR(transit) - LCA - LHR(transit) - SIN (stop) - SYD would still be 130k as an OW award

After September, you need to add all sectors to work out the mileage

BAsically, on a trip to LCA, I would suggest that the OW award is perhaps better since you have more flexibility in routings and you can put a stop in in asia with no issue

Thanks - this will be issued post September as I am only on about 140K miles at the moment and I am just planning ahead. In reality this is more likely to be a 2010 trip and I expect I will be looking for the shortest journey time with no stopovers.

So for a partner award to LCA post September the mileage is irrelevant as long as I get flights with no stopovers? That is doable subject to availability as I could fly syd-sin-lhr-lca with only 2 hours in LHR.

Also the reverse might be required as I might need to get people from LCA to SYD but with a 2 month stop in SYD I am guessing that will have to be 2 partner aawards as it wouldnt be possible to hold the award booking open for two months whilst waiting for the return leg to become available...

if there is no stopover ( which is 6 hours for awards unless no flights exist within 6 hours ) then it is fine

You could book the award flight LCA-SYD and just put dummy dates in for the return and then book the return once the availability is there

Thanks - I will see what my points balance is in December and start planning the Jan 2010 flight options and whether my parents require to be flown over early in Jan 2010...
