He says he's not the highest paid person at Qantas on an hourly basis-- that's A380 captains, on $380,000 a year.
"The issue is not pay, the biggest issue is the efficiencies we get out of the pilots is only about 480 hours a year - that's interesting work," he notes.
Mr Joyce says Singapore Airlines and Emirates get about 800 hours a year, highlighting rostering issues at Qantas.

Licensed engineers are striking today to protect job security, which Qantas says is based on unaffordable practices, suited to aircraft technology decades old.
It argues the traditional "walk around" by a licensed engineer, a multi-point sight check on each aircraft after each flight, is no longer needed for at least half its fleet.
"No other airline does it," Mr Joyce said. "We have the equivalent of 14 licensed engineers per aircraft - our competitors average two."
About 14 workshop tasks, he says, can be safely done by a lesser-qualified "A Licence" employees.
