Interesting article given the timing, apparently planes are more reliable because we have computers!

Joyce looks to the future with optimism | Herald Sun

He says he's not the highest paid person at Qantas on an hourly basis-- that's A380 captains, on $380,000 a year.
"The issue is not pay, the biggest issue is the efficiencies we get out of the pilots is only about 480 hours a year - that's interesting work," he notes.
Mr Joyce says Singapore Airlines and Emirates get about 800 hours a year, highlighting rostering issues at Qantas.

and

Licensed engineers are striking today to protect job security, which Qantas says is based on unaffordable practices, suited to aircraft technology decades old.
It argues the traditional "walk around" by a licensed engineer, a multi-point sight check on each aircraft after each flight, is no longer needed for at least half its fleet.
"No other airline does it," Mr Joyce said. "We have the equivalent of 14 licensed engineers per aircraft - our competitors average two."
About 14 workshop tasks, he says, can be safely done by a lesser-qualified "A Licence" employees.

Mr Joyce, only 14 percent of Australians fly to Asia with QF because we dont want to fly JQ or dont like the lack of frequencies on offer, especially from non SYD/MEL departure points.

Get rid of MEL in that sentence and I agree with you. If you exclude JQ services, QF serve the same cities in Asia as they do from PER & BNE (ie HKG/SIN) albeit with slightly more frequency to HKG than from PER/BNE. In fact on a per head of population basis the frequency of QF's services to Asia ex-MEL are way below either PER/BNE .....

Of course he is, he just took a big bonus, not a good look to be negative while at the same time having your hand out.

That line really got to me. Does he really think that all a pilot does for their pay is the 480 hours a year that they sit in an actual aircraft seat?

I really don't think that line of reasoning, in a public statement, is something that should be being said by a CEO.

I am sure the pilots would not mind a drop in pay if it was made commensurate on an hourly basis with AJ when the shares etc are factored in, that is, give them the same share bonuses!
