For us airport lovers who enjoy sitting for an hour or two just watching the planes come and go, how's this for a good spot

That is a good spot.

Where is it???

I liked the view you get of Hong Kong airport from the cable car ride to is it Lantau island, but unfortunately it doesn't stop... Unless the thing breaks... Which is not really what you want... :)

It is Sugar Loaf mountain in Rio de Janero. At this point you are 400 meters (1300 feet) high. Due to wind conditions, take off and landings are generally towards you. Because of another mountain to the left of my position planes departing must make a fairly quick right turn as soon as they off the ground and they usually pass close by this position with the plane at about the same level as you are standing and just off to the side. It makes for an interesting view.

I would have sworn it was taken from a plane. Awesome!

I was reminded of one of my favorite airliner shots: this one.

You can get some great shots of ZQN from The Remarkables access road.

I've also got some nice shots over the years of BNE, SYD and MEL as I've flown over them.

The views from Sugarloaf are amazing in any direction... but I agree, watching the aircraft come from the north, circle around over Botafogo Beach while descending, and line up their landing from the south into SDU, all the while as you look down at their manoeuvre - is quite mesmerising.

Not my best pictures (I circled the plane in red, and the Christ statue in white), but here is a TAM flight landing at that Rio airport...

My vote for best pub by a runway goes to this place...

And here's the view, once you get there...

One of the best places I've been is the Airport Pub/Hotel at Manchester Airport. The beer garden is right beside runway 23R. The view is amazing and I'm always amazed that the authorities have allowed a public viewing spot so close to the runway!
Way to get a slick of jet fuel on your lager!

That view looked strangely familiar however I've never been to Brazil then I realised some of the scenes in the James Bond movie Moonraker were taken there. The bad guy in the movie Drax had some freighter aircraft that took off from the airport at RIO.

There's apparently a good viewing spot in RAR that's very close to the runway & I saw a brief clip on a tv ad for a program that featured what I think is RAR as it showed an NZ 767 on finals.

Friend of mine is senior Flight Controller at HKG airport, couple years back got permission to take Mrs Lime and self up to control tower, was an amazing view, so busy, planes were landing and taking off about every 30 seconds, as we left at ground level a 747 was taxiing out, was enormous to be so close and very loud.
