Apart from the numerous food and beverage outlets, it seems the shops in SYD Domestic would be struggling for lack of customers. If franchise operations, could be worse with charges payable to franchisor.

What's the basis for this? New retail data out?

I had visibility to some information several months back and there was nothing of concern in it re the state of play then.

I'm not privy to any data. Just casual observations that certain retailers, esp. Clothing ones, seem to be lean. More staff than customers.

I read somewhere they make more money from retail than from airline operations....is this correct

Those shops always seem to be empty. I guess they must be making enough out of the few customers they have to make it worthwhile. (i.e. their prices are expensive.)

To me, that seems to be the case in almost every airport I've walked thru, especially those that are trying to sell luggage once I've already consigned mine to the hold...

I've wondered about that too, if you buy luggage once in the sterile area, surely you can only sell carry on sized bags only? And what then does the buyer do if they are already at their carry on limit?

Some of them are not expensive, I bought sunglasses there on the way out after checking prices in Melb retailers and the airport store was a little cheaper.
