Fair enough IMHO - they knew what they were signing up for! Now to get rid of the fat passengers who spill over into your seat ;) (dreams)...

Air India fires 10 overweight flight attendants

AN Indian airline has dismissed ten female flight attendants who were grounded for being overweight.
The sackings came after the Air India cabin crew were warned about meeting minimum physical fitness standards and given sufficient time to lose weight, the Press Trust of India news agency reported.

A warning is a warning and should be taken seriously especially if it is written into an employment contract. How much time is sufficient time to lose weight?

You would assume what the doctors said was the time + a margin.
I am sure if they showed improvment they would have had a chance.

Wonder if the same contract terms apply to pilots and male cabin crew too ???

No they do not apply the same standard - as far as I have read.

The news sources mention that recently a male purser got stuck in the aircraft toilet and it had to be dismantled to get him out.

Oh and as for overweight

For an 18-year-old air hostess with a height of 152 cm, the maximum weight permissible is 50 kg, while for air hostesses in the age group of 26 to 30 and a height of 152 cm, the weight limit is 56 kg

hardly porky healthy range is between 44-58

I agree, hardly "porky range" at all. I would think that it would be very difficult to lose weight if you are in that low weight range anyway - I've seen articles about anorexic people weighing not that much less than the weights quoted. Hardly a healthy weight range either - they must subsist on a diet of lettuce leaves and water !!

And "nice" to see the old double standard being applied - NOT.

Wow, that is harsh ! 50 or 56kg is not fat as you pointed out.
Even the likes of SQ wont impose such a limit like that... actually SQ in recent years have very much relaxed there rules on the girls i think. Seems they dont descriminate nearly as much as they used to but could be wrong, maybe i am just seeing things.

As for the guy stuck in the toilet, there must be another reason unless he was 200kg !

Ages ago in TAA they had limits of 8 stone (about 48 kilos) for air hostesses as they were called then and you had to resign once you reached the age or 28 or if you tied the knot. Yikes!

As for the double standard of applying the same rule to males - do they even allow male flight attendants? If Indian Airlines are in the dark ages with regard to weight limits they would probably view male flight attendants with disdain.

Wonder if they have any female pilots?

As for their height limits - 152cm that would be way too short in fact under the minimum height required by a lot of airlines. If you are too short to reach the overhead locker of a Qantas 737 how are you able to reach the locker on an Indian Airlines 737?

<..>

Hence why it was so popular to find yourself an air hostess girlfriend/wife back then... (Thin, young, available) and you know once you married her she had to leave her job as well.
Rather funny when you think about it. We have come so far yet not really so far. No if you want that you need to head to Asia :D
