Air NZ looking to sell some/all of stake in VA

The financial performance of Virgin has not been ok. Without the big partners chipping in more money as loans to support it the business would have run short of cash to continue.
This is not ok and changes will happen sooner rather than later but it is hard to figure what those changes will be. Making losses is never ok in an airline when fuel was relatively low priced.

I wonder if that suggests Delta, or like others have put forward - Alaksa? It's going to be fascinating to see what they do

Weird - that suggests airlines other than SQ or EY, presumably? They have already contributed what they can. I guess the most likely suspects would be someone out of the US or China. And SQ would presumably not be thrilled if it was someone from China!

I'm a bit surprised there are more than a very few people who are that keen to buy into a moderately financially-challenged airline with what is now a very strong competitor. It makes sense for people like SQ who are trying to gain market share in AU and hurt the QF group at the same time, but how many airlines are there in a similar situation?

SQ shares are listed so there may not be an appetite to buy more of a business that is losing money.

RB spotted in the VA Sydney lounge yesterday. Not just here to serve coffee I suspect.........

Well he certainly couldn't make worse coffee than the 'baristas' in the VA lounge. ;)

Hopefully here for something interesting and VA related...

Speaking of which (well almost speaking of which)....I looked at VM for home and contents insurance yesterday and was amazed there is no deal for VFF points......just seems very odd, like no VFF points for VA valet parking!

Why? They aren't actually connected businesses - they just pay a royalty for use of the name and would need to negotiate a points agreement like any other company

The branding is supposed to give you benefits for staying with the brand, even if they are different. Have a look at Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, from train to gym to online wine to financial services.

If you think there is goodwill in the name why wouldn't you do a deal to get the loyal Virgin customer in.

I hope SQ does buy the anz shares as i think than VA can go after Qf alot better than they have been able to do. Just hope there will be announcement soon

In a perfect world SQ would own or have a majority share in airlines in Australia and China to add to Vistara in India. That would put them in a perfect position in the biggest and best markets this side of the planet. Someone at SQ would surely be thinking of this.

Cheers

Opportunity lost - I hoped SQ would buy the lot and VA join Star Alliance.

Disappointing.....an alliance with Hainan airlines is not going help most passengers I would have thought.

Wow... Wikipedia indicates they serve over 500 domestic and international routes, and are the only Chinese (excl. Hong Kong) carrier to receive 5-star rating with Skytrax.

"Hainan Airlines is one of the seven Asian airlines rated as five-star by Skytrax, along with All Nippon Airways, Asiana Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Garuda Indonesia, Qatar Airways, and Singapore Airlines."

They have also have a major hub in Beijing.

This choice doesn't sound as bad as it may initially. Perhaps VA are thinking more about the billion people north of us who may want to visit Australia, rather than the domestic-outbound opportunities.

Yeah, all I can think of is they are more interested in improving access into that market, not improving things for their existing customers... Well, and a possible cash source.

Oh well. Things were looking up for a bit with rumours of some of the other possible buyers, but I can't see this doing anything for me. Even if this funds the much-awaited international expansion, it'll be expansion into China, which doesn't help me, personally speaking.
