My son booked the cheapest Air New Zealand ticket to go PER-AKL-LAX and return. Now he has asked me if he can upgrade to get home with Air New Zealand.I have Velocity and SQ Kris points he could use and I am in Los Angeles. Can I do anything for him on these points and if so how? I have not used Air New Zealand for a decade so I have zero bargaining power with them. His flight is in 2 days time and he wants to keep his scheduled arrival into Perth unchanged. Is there a number to call ?

Sorry, I doubt if there is anything you can do....

To upgrade from the cheap fares one needs to use the NZ program (Airpoints) "currency"... Airpoint $.. OR the complimentary upgrades granted to Gold/Gold Elite members...

*A upgrades (using your SQ points fr'instance) can only be done from the highest economy fare buckets....

If there is some other method available (other than buying up to C which would no doubt be $$$$$$) then I am unaware of it...

Anyone?????

It's probably too late; however ...

You could try for a "Standby" upgrade to business, the cost of which for an Oz

member would be:
LAX-AKL:

660 (

200 for PE)
AKL-PER:

390

You can transfer AX MR to Airpoints at a rate if 100MR:

1.

So you'll need 105,000 MR before you start. (Although transfer seem to be pretty quick). Aside from that there are no guarantees. It depends upon loads and the pecking order (GE, G, S get priority.)

OK,I tried Air New Zealand and they would do it as there were seats in J but I don't have their points. I then call SQ and they cannot do the upgrade because it is not an upgradeable class of ticket.Thank you Trooper and Serfty for your thoughts......I just don't have points that are warehoused anywhere so today I cannot get the points into the starting gate.SQ Kris don't have a flight to get him home on his schedule so it means he goes with his booked economy ticket and I get to save 100k to 150k of points.

My tinny son just upgraded to Premium Economy at check in for $470AUD for LAX to AKL by asking at the counter! The other thing I found out was he came PER-SIN-LAX on my Kris points on Standard redemption then bought the one way thru AirNewZealand at the cheapest price on Expedia. It's ok to see he is learning!
